Charles's obituary
Charles "Charlie" Smith (82) a long time resident of Fairview Beach, in King George, VA and more recently of Ocala, FL , passed away into the loving arms of Jesus on December 10, 2024. Born on May 18, 1942, Charles led a fulfilling life and was cherished by all who knew him.
In 1964, Charles graduated from Western Kentucky University, thereby setting the foundation for a remarkable career. He commenced his professional journey at the Army Ammunition Procurement and Supply Agency in 1965 and proceeded to take on a role at the Naval Weapons Laboratory (now NCWC) in 1966. Charlie was recognized for his work in interior ballistics and barrel wear predictions. He dedicated himself fully to his career until his retirement in 1999 from NSWC.
Charles was blessed with a loving family. He married his first wife, Ramah Redd Smith, and they shared six years of marriage before her untimely death in 1969. He found love again with Susan Gerstley Smith, who became his wife in September of 1973. They were married for over 51 years. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Tracy (James) Hamburger and Terry (Michele) Smith. They have 5 grandchildren. Connor, Kayla, Joshua, Emma and Jasper. The family remembers him as a caring and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
A man of many hobbies, Charles was a nature enthusiast who loved gardening, boating, hiking to waterfalls, and walking on the beach.
In memory of Charles, a memorial service will be held on July 15, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at the Historyland Memorial Park & Arboretum in King George County, VA. As we remember Charles, we celebrate his life, his achievements, and his enduring legacy. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Susan, his children, his grandchildren and all those who had the privilege to know him.
