Dr. Charles Robert Marek of Vestavia Hills, Alabama died peacefully on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 following a recent stroke. Chuck was a loving husband and is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sunny L. Marek. He is also survived by three sons and their families including seven grandchildren, and his two brothers and their families. Chuck was the first in his family to attend college. He earned his bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees in civil engineering, all from the University of Illinois, where he also taught for five years. Chuck moved to Vestavia Hills, AL in 1972 and enjoyed a distinguished career at Vulcan Materials Company from 1972 until he retired in 2008. Chuck was active for many years in a number of groups and clubs and will be missed by his friends in empty-nesters, supper club, Rotary club, the Woodworker’s Guild, and the Scotch club. In lieu of flowers, friends and family can make donations in his honor to Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, October 19, 2020 at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church.
