Charles's obituary
Charles Edward "Ched" LaFleur
November 11, 1946 – July 16, 2024
Ched LaFleur, a devoted father, proud Navy veteran, and talented artist, passed away peacefully at home in Brunswick, Ohio, at the age of 77.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Ched moved with his family to Memphis, Tennessee, as a child. He attended the Campus School at Memphis State University (historically known as the West Tennessee State Normal School) and graduated from Central High School.
From 1968 to 1973, Ched honorably served in the United States Navy as a Boatswain’s Mate aboard the U.S.S. New Orleans during the Vietnam War era. He remained a proud veteran and patriot throughout his life.
Ched worked for decades at Memphis State University (later the University of Memphis) in the Physical Plant and Planning Department. He retired in 2008 and moved to Northeast Ohio in 2009 to be near his daughter and grandchildren.
Ched was a true Renaissance man. He was a Golden Gloves boxer, skilled martial artist, avid golfer, coin collector, classical guitarist, and gifted painter whose artwork adorns homes across the country. But above all else, family was his greatest joy. Nothing made him happier than being surrounded by loved ones.
A lifelong Memphis Tigers fan and recent convert to Cleveland sports, Ched especially enjoyed watching Browns games with his family on Sundays.
Despite facing numerous health challenges in his later years, Ched never complained. He met adversity with gratitude, resilience, and dignity.
Ched will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, strength, generosity, and deep love for those around him.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Kimberly LaFleur, and son-in-law, Douglas Berger; his cherished granddaughters, Monica LaFleur, Kelly LaFleur, and Alexandra Berger (by marriage); his beloved sisters, Eva Lawrence "Laurie" LaFleur (his twin) and Carroll LaFleur Blair; his nephew, Parish Walker Blair; and his great-grandchildren, Charlize Tonk and Jayce Tonk. He also leaves behind many dear friends who treasured his humor, loyalty, and compassion.
Ched was preceded in death by his biological parents, Edward Harcourt LaFleur and Mary Sue James LaFleur, and his adoptive parents, Charles Eli McDaniel and Dorothy McDaniel McDaniel.
