Charles's obituary

Charles Justin Anderson, 83, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 4, 1942, in Montgomery, Alabama, to Marlin H. and Augusta Ruth (Goodson) Anderson, the youngest of seven children. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and was a member of the Generals basketball team. He attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery on a basketball scholarship, before joining the United States Army and serving in Germany for two years. After a brief return to Huntingdon, Charles graduated from Birmingham-Southern College, where he continued to play basketball. He later graduated from Birmingham School of Law. He was a founding partner, with his good friend Drennen Williams, of Anderson & Williams (later Anderson, Williams, & Davis and Anderson, Williams, & McKinnis). They worked together for 42 years.

Charles was a loving father to Lanie, Holly, Jason, Cody, John Robert, Rachel, and Gabriella. He coached youth basketball and baseball and served as the President of the Cahaba Heights Athletic Association for many years. He was an avid runner and a member of the Birmingham Track Club. He ran for a large portion of his adult life, competing in 10Ks and marathons throughout the country. Charles and a group of friends travelled to every Major League Baseball stadium, and he was a passionate University of Alabama fan. He was a Tide Pride member, owned an abundance of Alabama memorabilia, and was a wealth of Alabama sports information.

Charles was a man of faith throughout his life, starting every day reading the Bible and The Upper Room devotional. He put others before himself, caring for family and friends and going out of his way to help others in need. He enjoyed hard work and was excited to get a tractor later in life, sometimes using it to even collect the mail and newspaper. He loved the daily crossword puzzle and was an avid learner. He knew trivia like no other, always sharing fun facts and wonderful stories.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Allen (Sonny) Anderson, Joanne Thompson, Patricia Magdelinski, and Marlin Anderson, and son, Alexander Anderson. He is survived by his children Lanie Burbach (George Sinclair), Holly Tate (Dayne), Jason Anderson (Anne Powell), Cody Anderson (Tiesha), John Robert Anderson, Rachel Jones (Chris), and Gabriella Anderson; grandchildren Taylor Buchanan (Beau), Shelby Burbach, Ryland Anderson, Caroline Tate, William Anderson, Demerian Powe, Demetrice Powe, Demetri Powe, De’Myriana Anderson, Codi Anderson, and Juliet Jones; and sisters Doris Johnson and Julia Andrews.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the members of Angel’s Quality Care Providers: Gail Watkins, Jerlener Dixon, Erica Dixon, Gloria Perryman, Diane Lewis, Brenda Cox, and Cynthia Rogers for their compassionate care and support for Charles and his family.

A funeral will be held at Morningstar Methodist Church in Chelsea, AL on Saturday, October 25, at 1 p.m., with visitation beginning at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Angel’s Quality Care Providers (Venmo: DixonGurl or Cashapp: $DixonGurl), Charles also donated to St. Jude and ASPCA for many years of his life.
