Chick's obituary
Charles “Chick” James Mitchell, 81, of Portland, Oregon (formerly of Madison, Wisconsin) passed away on April 15, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on October 14, 1944, in Syracuse, New York, to the late Leland Sanford and Florence Dwyer Mitchell. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Dubuque and later a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He devoted his professional life to education and served in Bogota, Colombia as a member of the Peace Corps.
Chick married Marie "Nelly" Mitchell on July 4, 1970, in Paris, France; together they built a life centered on their shared love of travel, education, and helping others. Their partnership was marked by curiosity, generosity, and a deep appreciation for people and cultures. He will be remembered for his kindness, warmth, and sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nelly Mitchell; daughter, Vanessa J. Mitchell (David) of Cessy, France; son, Nicolas F. Mitchell (Kristen) of Beaverton, Oregon; granddaughters, Sophia and Delphine; brothers, Michael S. Mitchell (Cathy) of Heathrow, Florida; Brian E. Mitchell (Patty) of Baldwinsville, New York; sister, Judith M. Dieso (Stephen) of Kansas City, Missouri; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Mitchell of North Syracuse, New York; brother-in-law, Jeff Owens of Baldwinsville, New York; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was also a very proud grand-paw to Olive.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Mark (2020), and his sister, Lisa (2025).
Chick will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him. His family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the caring medical professionals at Tenderly Hospice and Markham House.
