Charles's obituary

It is with both joy and sorrow that we announce the passing of Charles Henry Hodson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, on Friday, November 20, 2020 in San Clemente, California. Charles was 90 years old. By God's grace, he was surrounded by family when he entered his heavenly rest after a difficult battle with Parkinsonism.

Charles–also known as Chuck or “Uncle Charlie”–was born on December 6, 1929 to James and Gladys Hodson in Whittier, California. After moving to Richmond, Indiana with his family, he graduated from Richmond High School in 1947. He went on to study at Earlham College. He paused his studies to serve in the US Air Force in Panama during the Korean War, then returned to Indiana to study at Purdue University. After earning a Master’s degree from Purdue in 1957, Chuck began working as an aeronautical engineer with North American Aviation near Los Angeles, California. During his 38-year career with North American/Rockwell, he worked on a number of aircraft projects, including the B-1 and the X-31.

Chuck met the love of his life, Marilyn Jeanne Dufford, in the singles’ group at Wilshire Methodist Church in Los Angeles, California. They were married on January 19, 1969 at Wilshire Methodist. They lived in Inglewood, California until shortly after the birth of their first daughter, Carol in 1970. They purchased a home in Torrance, California, where their second and third children, Jeff and Diana, were born in 1972 and 1974 respectively. The Hodsons spent many happy years in Torrance, where they were active in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, their children’s schools, and various community activities. After Chuck retired in 1995, he and Marilyn moved to San Clemente in 1997. There they have been active members of San Clemente Presbyterian Church.

In his more active years, Chuck enjoyed swimming and golf. During his children’s teenage years, he could often be found attending school events, working on Carol’s 1956 Buick, or serving as lifeguard for Jeff's surf sessions in Redondo Beach. After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, gathering with family and close friends, reading, and enjoying the ocean view from his San Clemente home. Chuck will be remembered for his steady faith in God, devotion to his wife and family, love of aviation, practical wisdom, and sense of humor.

Chuck was predeceased by his parents, James and Gladys Hodson, as well as his older sister, Doris Kindley. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Hodson; his sister, Annabel Usher; his children, Carol, Jeff, and Diana; 5 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

"Jesus said...'I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die."' –John 11:25-26
