Charles's obituary

Charles Homer Dean died on August 23, 2022, in Miami, Florida, in hospice care. He was 76.

Charly was born on June 23, 1946, in Albany, Georgia, the youngest of five children of Harry and Alice Dean. In 1952 the family moved to Miami, where Harry found work as a union painter. As a student at Miami Senior High School, Charly took a drafting course, which led to jobs as a draftsman and later a cadastral technician with Miami-Dade County’s parks and public works departments. During the very early part of his career, he was drafted for service in Vietnam but was discharged during basic training due to injuries from a motorcycle accident. A photo of the scene made the front page of the local section of the Miami Herald.

In 1975 he married Marsha Snow, and they settled in a brand-new home in West Kendall, where they remained for the rest of their lives. Together they traveled in England, Scotland, and Ireland and had two sons, Danny (1979) and Ryan (1986).

Charly retired as a title examiner in 2003 from the right-of-way division of the county’s public works department and enjoyed a quiet life at home.

One of Charly’s chief interests was fast cars and particularly Corvettes. This began after he built his own go-kart around age 12. Though he never had a Corvette, he did have a ’68 Firebird and a ’72 Cuda, which he souped up with the help of friends. Charly was also a master freemason and member of the South Miami Lodge, an amateur woodworker, a crossword fanatic, and an avid reader of the Herald and various current-events magazines. He’ll be remembered for enjoying the company of his family at all times, for taking good care of his home, and as an introvert who didn’t talk much about his own life but was happy to hear about the lives of others.

Charly is predeceased by his wife, Marsha, who died in March 2022, his father and mother (Harry and Alice), his two brothers (James and Ronnie), and his two sisters (Jan and Deanna). He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Danny and Andrea Dean of Elkhart, Indiana, and his son and daughter-in-law Ryan and Julie Dean of Miami and their son Hunter.
