Background

Charlie couldn't pass by a body of water without slowing down to scan for movement (there was always a rod in the car...because you just never know). He is most likely spending eternity on the poling platform of a skiff, scanning pristine flats for the slightest ripple or discoloration. But even when not catching (and releasing) his target species, he got much joy out of "communicating" with the dolphin, manatee, sea turtles, sharks, crocs, rays...etc., all so plentiful in our cherished, yet fragile, south Florida coastal environment. Our boat was always full of trash we pulled out of mangroves, and he saved countless creatures from human carelessness - even an alligator wrapped in a plastic construction fence (afterward saying he knew how to do it because he had "seen it once on TV"). So imagine our joy finding Gumbo Limbo Nature Center less than a mile away from our forever home in Boca Raton. This rustic yet world class, donation-dependent center and aquarium is a beacon for environmental education, research, and conservation. He loved visiting there (in fact we planned to go again Easter Weekend) and we decided that our retirement years were going to include volunteering to support its commitment to protecting our precious natural resources. If you are looking to make a donation in his name, please check out the website and consider sponsoring care for a baby sea turtle ($25) or for the rescue, rehab, and release of an adult sea turtle ($50). We had looked forward to living on this stretch of barrier island where these turtles, so crucial to our ecosystem, nest, hatch, and make their journey to the ocean over the next few months. Each time I pause to marvel at one of these majestic creatures during my open water swims, I'll smile knowing that Charlie's lasting impact went well beyond the humans he encountered.
