Chuck's obituary

Charles E. Bockenfeld, affectionately known to many as Chuck, Bock, Mr. B, Charlie, or Coach Bock, passed away peacefully of natural causes on July 20, 2025, in West Salem, Wisconsin, at the age of 78. His presence, laughter, and unwavering support left an indelible mark on countless lives in the West Salem community.

Born on October 17, 1946, in Milwaukee, Charles was the cherished son of Maurice Albert Bockenfeld and Pauline Florence Bockenfeld, both of whom preceded him in death. He shared a special bond with his late sister, Bonnie Reuter. From an early age, Charles exuded a spirited joy for life, a sense of humor that could fill a room, and a propensity to tease those he loved.

In 1964, Charles graduated from Messmer High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and continued his academic journey at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in 1969. He further pursued his interest in science, receiving an Associate degree in Applied Sciences and a Masters in Education.

On October 18, 1969, Charles married the love of his life, Mary. Together, they built a warm home filled with joy, laughter, and love, raising four devoted children.

A proud and passionate educator, Charles began his teaching career in 1974 with the West Salem School District, where he dedicated decades not just to teaching, but also to coaching, mentoring, and nurturing students inside and outside the classroom. Even after retirement, Charles continued to lend his talents as a substitute and part-time helper, embodying the philosophy that learning never truly ends.

Coach Bock was known for his outgoing spirit, quick wit, and dedication to helping others reach their full potential. He thrived on the sidelines coaching football and basketball teams and reveled in the excitement of live and televised sporting events. A true Wisconsinite, he wore the colors of the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers with pride. Among his many talents, Charles enjoyed woodworking, building practical and heartfelt items with his hands for his family to use and treasure. Friends and family will especially remember his famous homemade pancakes and strawberry jam, shared over lively breakfasts and family gatherings.

Beyond the classroom and the home, Charles was a pillar of the West Salem community. He played a pivotal role in planning school trips, volunteered on weekends to help students succeed, and devoted countless hours keeping official score at athletic events. Ever the social soul, he cherished friendly card and board games, and his love of life and learning shone in every interaction.

Charles is survived by his devoted wife, Mary, his children Carol Brown (Steven), Christen Bockenfeld (Darrell), Paula Bockenfeld, and James Bockenfeld (Amanda), and grandchildren Nathaniel, Emma, Dhalia, Deacon, Layla, Owen, and many extended family members.
