Cenith "Cenny" Belken, 68, of Aurora, CO, peacefully passed away on May 09, 2023, with her husband Larry by her side, after a long and difficult battle with the blood disorder MDS and acute leukemia.

Cenny was born on June 26, 1954 to Juan Antonio Polo Cabarcas and Maria del Carmen Manjarres de Polo in San Pedro de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia. She attended a Catholic boarding school in Minca, Colombia during her elementary and middle school years. Cenny graduated from high school at Instituto Nacional Agustín Nieto Caballero in 1975. She subsequently pursued a degree in Philology and Languages at Universidad del Atlántico in Barranquilla, Colombia, graduating in 1981.

Cenny was an extroverted, happy, organized person, who everyone knew was very special. An avid reader, she loved studying, fashion and was a great dancer. Most importantly, from an early age, Cenny took it upon herself to look after the wellbeing of her entire family, and was always an amazing daughter, sister, aunt, friend and later a wonderful wife.

Among her favorite things to do was to visit the family farm and organize various activities including sports, hiking and trips to the nearby river. After graduating from college, she entered a nationwide government contest in which she won the opportunity to become a teacher. After some time, Cenny decided to follow her childhood dream, which was to travel the world. She applied for the position of Spanish teacher for the expatriate staff working at a large construction project. This construction project was at the Cerrejon Coal Mine in Puerto Bolivar, La Guajira. Here she was to meet Larry, the love of her life, and begin traveling the world with him.

Cenny was a very highly thought of teacher at the Cerrejon project. When her language program was phased out, she was appointed office manager and translator for one of the construction managers until the project’s completion at the end of 1985. During this time, Cenny and Larry transitioned from a teacher student relationship to a boyfriend and girlfriend relationship. While a 6-day work week did not leave much time for the fun things in life, there was always time to party and dance the Saturday nights away and then enjoy the beaches on Sundays.

Larry returned to the USA to continue work on his master’s degree in July of 1985, and Cenny joined him in Florida at the end of 1985. Larry took a job in St. Petersburg, Florida and he and Cenny were married on April 18, 1986. She was advancing her English language skills at Eckard college there in St. Petersburg and then joined Larry as an office manager on the construction project until its completion at the end of 1986.

At the beginning of 1987, Larry was transferred to a project in New York City and so they packed up the house and moved to Long Island. Cenny worked for several companies on Long Island during their time in New York, and both enjoyed the big city life. Eventually both Larry and Cenny yearned for another overseas assignment, so the job hunt was on. Among job offers they considered was a project in Alexandria, Egypt. Cenny had always dreamed of going to Egypt and so the offer was accepted, and they were off to Egypt in mid-1988.

What started out as a 12-month assignment ended up being 8 years long with 2 years in Alexandria and another 6 years in Cairo. Larry and Cenny enjoyed the social life and while Cenny wasn’t working originally, she was taking French courses at the French cultural center in both Alexandria and Cairo for a total of 3 years. When she completed her final course, she was fluent in her third language, French. When the move was made to Cairo, Cenny was offered a Spanish teaching job at the Cairo American College, where she spent 5 years teaching. She enjoyed this job immensely, was thought of very well by the CAC management and beloved by her students. Living in Egypt allowed for extensive travel in Africa, Europe, Israel, and Australia. Cenny also became a naturalized American citizen which made her very proud.

In mid-1996 they moved back to Larry’s home office in Portland, OR and were sent to short term projects in Napa Valley, CA, Las Vegas, NV, Singapore and Folsom, CA. Cenny enjoyed the vagabond lifestyle for these two and a half years, working on her master’s degree and teaching at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, and teaching Spanish and French at the Singapore American International School.

In late 1998, Larry was offered a job in Israel/Palestine and so off they went. They lived in Jerusalem for the next 6 years while Larry was working in the West Bank/Palestine. Cenny was offered a teaching position at the American School in Tel Aviv, but the 3 hours of commuting each day from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv and back precluded her from taking the assignment. Not being one to sit around, Cenny started taking classes at the Hebrew Ulpan School where immigrants to Israel learned Hebrew. Over the next 3 years, she became fluent in Hebrew, her fourth language. During these 6 years, Cenny and Larry enjoyed a very busy social and travel schedule. Cenny also started to work on her financial investing skills and found a new calling in life.

In early 2005, Larry and Cenny left Israel for their next adventure in Colorado Springs, CO. After working overseas for so many years, this assignment allowed them to see what life was like in the USA again. They bought a house in Monument, CO and settled into a typical American lifestyle. Cenny continued to work on her financial investing skills full time, finding great satisfaction doing this and teaching others what she knew.

After only 2 years in the USA, Larry was offered a job in Sri Lanka helping with a Tsunami Reconstruction Project. They sold their house and moved again, this time to Colombo, Sri Lanka. For safety and convenience, they lived in a Hilton Aparthotel during their 2 year’s stay there. Cenny continued to work on her financial investing skills and enjoy life.

Next up was an assignment in Panama on the Panama Canal Expansion. Cenny and Larry were in Panama from 2009 to 2014 living in a nice house in the jungle. Cenny enjoyed gardening and socializing with friends. Also, she continued with her investing.

After Panama, Cenny and Larry were given an assignment in South Korea working on a new US Military Base. Working and living in South Korea was a challenge for Cenny, but they able to visit tourist sites in Korea and China.

Next stop for Cenny and Larry was Austin, TX for a short 6-month assignment. Cenny continued to study financial investing and practice it daily, but she was not fond of Texas.

Then in a surprise move, Cenny and Larry returned to Panama in early 2017. This time Cenny said that she would return only if she could live in a high-rise building on one of the upper floors. Luck was with them, they found just the right apartment on the 34th floor overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Cenny was happy living in Panama again amongst old friends and enjoyed pursuing her passion for financial activities. The plan was to travel in Central and South America, but Covid put a quick end to that plan. Life in Panama during Covid was very constricted. The restrictive lockdowns meant that Cenny and Larry spent a lot of time together at home.

Then in early 2021, Cenny started having health problems which continued until she had to be admitted to the hospital in Panama City in early August for 8 days. Her blood disorder, MDS, had returned and gotten worse and there was only so much that the doctors there could do there so the decision was made to get her stable and get her back to Denver where her doctors could help treat her problems. After arriving in Denver, she was immediately admitted to the hospital where she stayed for another week. Over the next year she was able to get a little better but still needed blood work done every week with blood and platelets transfusions as needed. This worked well until October of 2021 when she was diagnosed with a systemic fungal infection. This made her very sick, and she was hospitalized three times over the next four months. Very strong antifungal meds were given to her 3 times a week in the infusion center, which had reactions like that of chemotherapy in cancer victims. On the first Wednesday of May, she went in for her normal blood checks and everything was relatively normal. When she got home, she wasn’t felling well and by Friday she couldn’t eat even when Larry went to her favorite Colombian restaurant and brought her favorite foods to her. By early morning on Tuesday, the 9th of May, it was apparent that Larry would no longer be able to care for her, and paramedics were called to stabilize her and take her to the hospital. What the emergency room doctors found was that her white blood cell count was critically high and that her MDS had transformed to acute leukemia. At this point, they could only make her as comfortable as possible and await the inevitable.

Cenny was blessed with a life well lived. She was able to pursue her passions of travel, adventure and financial security for herself and her beloved family. She had become the matriarch of her family, helping with many of the children’s schooling, many of whom graduated from university. Cenny’s family and others were recipients of her kindness and generosity throughout her life. She was unique, one of a kind and loved by all of her many friends from around the world.

Cenny was predeceased by her parents Juan and Maria, brother Juan Polo Noriega, and nephew Gerson Tellez Polo. She is survived by her husband Larry and her brothers and sisters and their spouses: Angel Enrique Polo Noriega, Judith Polo Noriega, Jorge Eliecer Polo Manjarres, Margarita Sofia Polo Manjarres, Alberto Polo Manjarres, David Polo Manjarres, Aida Luz Polo Manjarres, Elizabeth Maria Polo Manjarres, Jesus Antonio Polo Manjarres, and Daniel Polo Manjarres. Her nieces and nephews and their spouses: Julio, Ernesto, William, Juan, Alberto Enrique, Javier Camilo, Angelica Maria, Claudia, Angela Cristina, Ennio, Arquímedes, Mery, Jaime, Bárbara, Alejandra, Didier, Yuri Alaín, Paula Andrea, Joel, Andres Camilo, Carlos Andres, Marco Antonio, Luis Felipe, Jesus David, Juan Leonardo, Daniel, 34 grandnieces/nephews, and a great-grandnephew. She is also survived by her goddaughters, Rylee Robertson and Omaira Manjarrez, and a godson, Danny Gomez.

Cenith “Cenny” Belken, 60, de Aurora, CO, falleció pacíficamente el 9 de Mayo del 2023, con su esposo Larry a su lado, después de una batalla larga y difícil contra un trastorno sanguíneo llamado MDS y leucemia aguda.

Cenny nació el 26 de Junio de 1954 en San Pedro de la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia. Asistió a un internado católico en Minca, Colombia durante sus años de escuela primaria y secundaria. Cenny se graduó de bachillerato del Instituto Nacional Agustin Nieto Caballero en 1975. Posteriormente, recibió su titulo universitario en Filología y Lenguajes de la Universidad del Atlántico en Barranquilla Colombia, graduándose en 1981.

Cenny era una persona extrovertida, alegre y organizada, de la cual todos sabían que era muy especial. Lectora ávida, le encantaba estudiar, la moda y era una gran bailarina. Lo que es más importante, desde una temprana edad, Cenny se encargó de velar por el bienestar de toda su familia, siendo siempre una gran hija, hermana, tia, amiga, y mas adelante, una esposa maravillosa.

Dentro de sus actividades favoritas estaban visitar la finca de la familia organizar actividades incluyendo deportes, caminatas y visitas al río. Después de graduarse de la universidad, ingresó a un concurso nacional del gobierno en donde ganó la oportunidad de convertirse en profesora. Después de un tiempo, Cenny decidió seguir el sueño que tenía desde muy pequeña; viajar por todo el mundo. Ella aplicó a una posición como profesora de Español para el personal expatriado que trabajaba en un gran proyecto de construcción. Este proyecto de construcción fue en la Mina de Carbon del Cerrejón en Puerto Bolivar, La Guajira. Es aquí donde ella conoció a Larry, el amor de su vida, y comenzó a viajar por el mundo con él.

Cenny fue una profesora muy apreciada en el proyecto del Cerrejón. Cuando su programa de idiomas fue eliminado, ella fue designada como gerente de oficina y traductora para uno de los gerentes de la construcción hasta la culminación del proyecto a finales de 1985. Durante este tiempo, Cenny y Larry pasaron de una relación maestro y estudiante a una relación de novios. Si bien una semana laboral de 6 días no dejaba mucho tiempo para disfrutar de las cosas divertidas de la vida, siempre había tiempo para bailar y festejar los sábados en la noche y disfrutar de las playas los domingos.

Larry regresó a los Estados Unidos para continuar trabajando en su maestría en Julio de 1985, y Cenny se unió a él a finales de 1985. Larry tomó un trabajo en St. Petersburg, Florida y él y Cenny se casaron el 18 de Abril de 1986. Ella estaba avanzando en sus habilidades en el idioma Inglés en el Eckard College en St. Petersburg y luego se unió a Larry como gerente de la oficina en el proyecto de construcción hasta que culminó a finales de 1986.

A principios de 1987, Larry fue transferido a un proyecto en New York, entonces empacaron la casa y se mudaron a Long Island. Cenny trabajó para varias empresas en Long Island durante su estadía en Nueva York, y ambos disfrutaron de la vida de la gran ciudad. Cuando terminó su última clase, ella hablaba con fluidez su tercer lenguaje, Francés. Cuando se mudaron para el Cairo, a Cenny le ofrecieron un trabajo enseñando Español en el Cairo American College, en donde ella estuvo enseñando por 5 años. Ella disfrutaba de este trabajo enormemente, la gerencia del CAC pensaban muy bien de ella y era muy querida por sus alumnos. Vivir en Egipto les permitió viajar extensivamente por África, Europa, Israel y Australia. Cenny también se convirtió en ciudadana estadounidense naturalizada algo de lo cual ella estaba muy orgullosa.

A mediados de 1996, regresaron a la oficina central de Larry en Portland, OR y fueron enviados a realizar proyectos a corto plazo en Napa Valley, CA, Las Vegas, NV, Singapur y Folsom, CA. Cenny disfrutó de la vida bohemia durante estos dos años medio, al mismo tiempo trabajando en su maestría y enseñando en la Universidad de Nevada en Las Vegas, y enseñando Español y Francés en la Escuela Internacional Americana de Singapur.

A finales de 1998, a Larry le ofrecieron un trabajo en Israel/Palestina el cual decidió tomar y se fueron a vivir allá. Vivieron en Jerusalén durante los siguientes 6 años mientras Larry trabajaba en Cisjordania/Palestina. A Cenny le ofrecieron un puesto de profesora en la Escuela Americana en Tel Aviv, pero el viaje de ida y vuelta era de 3 horas cada día de Jerusalén a Tel Aviv lo cual le impidió aceptar la posición. Al no ser una persona que le gustaba quedarse sentada, Cenny comenzó a tomar clases en la Escuela Hebrea Ulpán donde los emigrantes en Israel aprendían Hebreo. Durante los siguientes 3 años, ella aprendió a hablar Hebreo con fluidez, su cuarto idioma. Durante esos 5 años, Cenny y Larry disfrutaron de una agenda social y de viajes muy ocupada. Cenny también comenzó a trabajar en sus habilidades de inversión financiera y encontró una nueva vocación en la vida.

A principios del 2005, Larry y Cenny dejaron Israel para comenzar su siguiente aventura en Colorado Springs, CO. Después de trabajar por muchos años en el extranjero, esta asignación les permitió a ellos ver como era la vida en Estados Unidos nuevamente. Compraron una casa en Monument, CO y se establecieron en un estilo de vida típico Americano. Cenny continuó trabajando en sus habilidades de inversión financiera de tiempo completo, encontrando una gran satisfacción en hacerlo y enseñándole a otros lo que ella sabía.

Después de solamente 2 años de estar en Estados Unidos, a Larry le ofrecieron un trabajo en Sri Lanka ayudando con un Proyecto de Reconstrucción del Tsunami. Vendieron su casa y se mudaron nuevamente, esta vez a Colombo, Sri Lanka. Por motivos de seguridad y comodidad, vivieron en un Apartahotel de Hilton durante los dos años de estadía en ese lugar. Cenny continuó trabajando en sus habilidades de inversión financiera y disfrutando de la vida.

El siguiente paso fue una asignación en Panama en la Expansión del Canal de Panamá. Cenny y Larry estuvieron en Panamá desde el 2009 al 2014 viviendo en una casa hermosa en la jungla. Cenny disfrutaba de la jardinería y de socializar con amigos. También continuó con sus inversiones.

Después de Panamá, a Cenny y a Larry les dieron una asignación en Korea del Sur trabajando en una nueva base militar de los Estados Unidos. Trabajar y vivir en Korea del Sur fue un reto para Cenny, pero ellos pudieron visitar los sitios turísticos de Korea y China.

La siguiente parada de Cenny y Larry fue en una asignación corta de 6 meses en Austin, TX. Cenny continuó estudiando inversión financiera y practicándola diariamente, pero no le tomó mucho cariño a Texas.

Luego, en un movimiento sorpresa, Cenny y Larry regresaron a Panamá a principios del 2017. Esta vez, Cenny dijo que solamente iba a regresar si podia vivir en un edificio alto en uno de los pisos superiores. La suerte los estaba acompañando y encontraron el apartamento perfecto en el piso 34 con vista al océano pacifico. Cenny estaba feliz de vivir en Panamá de nuevo entre viejos amigos y disfrutando de su pasión por las actividades financieras. El plan era viajar por Centro y Sur América, pero el Covid acabó rápidamente con esos planes. La vida en Panamá durante el Covid fue muy restringida. Los confinamientos restrictivos significaron que Cenny y Larry pasaron mucho tiempo juntos en casa.

A principios del 2021, Cenny comenzó a tener problemas de salud los cuales continuaron hasta que tuvo que ser internada en el hospital de la Ciudad de Panamá a principios de Agosto por 8 días. Su trastorno en la sangre, MDS, había regresado y empeorado y los medicos allí no podían hacer mucho, por lo que se tomó la decision de estabilizarla y llevarla de regreso a Denver donde los médicos pudieran ayudarla a tratar sus problemas de salud. Después de llegar a Denver, ella fue admitida inmediatamente al hospital donde tuvo que quedarse por otra semana. Durante el siguiente año ella pudo mejorar un poco pero aún necesitaba que le hicieran análisis de sangre cada dos semanas con transfusiones de sangre y plaquetas según fuera necesario. Esto funcionó bien hasta Octubre del 2021, cuando la diagnosticaron con una infección micótica sistémica. Esto la enfermó gravemente y fue hospitalizada tres veces durante los siguientes cuatro meses. Le dieron medicamentos antimicóticos muy fuertes 3 veces por semana en un centro de infusión, que tenían reacciones como las de la quimioterapia en víctimas de cancer. El primer miércoles de Mayo, ella fue a sus chequeos normales de sangre y todo parecía relativamente normal. Cuando llegó a la casa no se sentía muy bien, y el Viernes ya no podía comer, incluso cuando Larry había ido a su restaurante Colombiano favorito y le había traído sus comidas preferidas. En la madrugada del martes, 9 de Mayo, era claro que Larry no podía cuidar mas de ella, y se llamó a los paramédicos para que la estabilizaran y la llevaran al hospital. Lo que los médicos de la sala de emergencias encontraron fue que su recuento de glóbulos blancos era críticamente alto y que su MDS se había transformado en leucemia aguda. En este punto, lo único que podían hacer era que estuviera lo mas cómoda posible y esperar lo inevitable.

Cenny fue bendecida con una vida bien vivida. Ella pudo perseguir sus pasiones de viajar, de vivir aventuras y tener seguridad financiera para ella y su amada familia. Se había convertido en la matriarca de su familia, ayudando con la educación de muchos de los niños, la mayoría de los cuales se graduaron de la universidad. La familia de Cenny y muchos otros fueron afortunados en recibir su amabilidad y generosidad a lo largo de su vida. Ella era única, de las que solo existe una en la vida, y amada por todos sus amigos alrededor del mundo.

Fallecieron con anterioridad a Cenny sus padres Juan y María, su hermano Juan Polo Noriega, y su sobrino Gerson Tellez Polo. Le sobreviven su esposo Larry, y sus hermanos y hermanas y esposos (as): Angel Enrique Polo Noriega, Judith Polo Noriega, Jorge Eliecer Polo Manjarres, Margarita Sofia Polo Manjarres, Alberto Polo Manjarres, David Polo Manjarres, Aida Luz Polo Manjarres, Elizabeth Maria Polo Manjarres, Jesus Antonio Polo Manjarres, y Daniel Polo Manjarres. También sus sobrinos y sobrinas y sus esposos(as): Julio, Ernesto, William, Juan, Alberto Enrique, Javier Camilo, Angelica Maria, Claudia, Angela Cristina, Ennio, Arquímedes, Mery, Jaime, Bárbara, Alejandra, Didier, Yuri Alaín, Paula Andrea, Joel, Andres Camilo, Carlos Andres, Marco Antonio, Luis Felipe, Jesus David, Juan Leonardo, Daniel, 34 sobrinos nietos/nietas, y un sobrino bisnieto.
