Carrie's obituary

Carrie Elizabeth Karns Shreck was born November 12, 1953 in Watonga, OK to Donald and Leila “Lorene” Karns. She spent her final days surrounded by loved ones and passed away May 20, 2023 in Fort Worth, TX.

She spent most of her childhood in Laverne, Oklahoma, where she was a student through her Junior year of high school. She graduated from Enid High School in 1972. Carrie went on to attend Oklahoma State University. While attending OSU, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. She continued her education at the University of Tulsa, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Later she obtained a Master’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Oklahoma and a Master's Degree in Telecommunications from Oklahoma State University.

Her dedication to the care of others was apparent in her professional career. After practicing labor and delivery nursing in a clinical setting, she became the Director of Nursing at Seminole Junior College. When she moved to Enid in 1992, she was the Director of Education at Bass Hospital. She later joined St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, where she served as Chief Nursing Officer until her retirement in 2009. As a member of P.E.O International, she was dedicated to the advancement of women. Carrie was highly regarded by her peers and medical community. She exuded kindness, compassion and professionalism, key traits that made her a great nurse.

Carrie had a lifelong love of gardening, and after her retirement, she became a Master Gardener. She also enjoyed traveling the world. In her retirement, she and her husband of 22 years, Ronald Shreck MD, made many memories throughout Europe, South America and Asia. She was a smart, funny, beautiful, determined woman who was devoted to her family. Her dedication to her family was illustrated by her move from Oklahoma, where she spent most of her life, to Fort Worth, TX, where she was able to live closer to her two daughters, Devon and Paige, and her beloved grandchildren. She was also a member of the Methodist Church throughout her life.

She is survived by her husband, Ron; her brother, Michael Karns; her sister, Margaret Ann Karns Hosier; her daughters, Devon Williams (Travis) and Paige Waszkewitz (Eric); her stepsons, Geoff (Carolyn), Darrick (Makayla), and Jon; her grandsons, Colton and Kase Williams and Cooper Shreck; and her granddaughters, Edith and Isla Waszkewitz. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Kathryn Jane Karns Oden.

In honor of her passion for gardening and nature, a celebration of life will be held at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens, 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd, Fort Worth, TX 76107 on July 22, 2023 at 10AM with a reception to follow.
