Casey's obituary
Carolyn was born on August 16, 1931 to parents Louise and Colonel Ira Black in Los Angeles, California. She had three siblings: Robert, Ira (Woody), and Nancee. Casey (the name almost everyone called her most of her life) grew up in various locations around the world as her father served in the U.S. Army.
Casey graduated from Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia in 1952, majoring in Political Science. After graduating, she lived in Washington D.C. and was a translator at the Dutch desk for the CIA.
In 1956, Casey married Roger Underwood of Amherst, New Hampshire. They were married in Washington D.C. where they both worked for the CIA. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Ravenswood, West Virginia, where Roger worked for Kaiser Aluminum. While living there, all three of their children were born in Gallipolis, Ohio - Susan, David and Sally.
In 1965, Roger was transferred to Oakland, California and the Underwoods made their home in Danville, California. Casey was active in the Community Presbyterian Church, serving in various positions. She also became a teacher at the church's pre-school. She took up tennis in her mid-forties and played competitively in several different leagues.
In 1992, Casey and Roger moved to Arroyo Grande, on the Central Coast of California, and built their dream home together as Roger retired. Casey was involved in AAUW (American Association of University Women), several gardening clubs, and active in the Grover Beach Presbyterian Church. She played tennis three times a week at the Avila Bay Club, and continued competitive play for 17 years! She loved the sport and especially enjoyed playing in a social group.
Casey, along with Roger, were dog and cat lovers, and often read with a cat in their laps. She loved to travel with Roger and enjoyed trips to Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, Greece, Scotland, Norway, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Vienna, Budapest, Romania, Costa Rica, and the Ukraine.
Casey was involved at Grace Bible Church, attending a women's Bible study group, and adult Sunday school class and a couples Tuesday night Bible Study Group, which she and Roger started.
In 2016 Casey's loving husband, Roger, passed away at the age of 91. Within a few years, Casey found herself feeling a bit lonely living by herself out in the country. She decided to move to Fallbrook, California, which was much closer to her daughter, Sally, and her granddaughter, Kelly and her family.
Casey amazed many people by maintaining her independent spirt and buying a beautiful home on one acre with a pool! She settled into her new life quickly by joining the local Newcomer's Club, Christ the King Lutheran Church, a Friday afternoon bridge group at the Senior Center, and the Fallbrook Tennis Club. She and her two orange tabby cats, Toby and Nicky, enjoyed the peacefulness and beauty of her new home!
Casey is survived by: her sister, Nancee Black, of Maryland; her brother, Ira (Woody) Black, of Texas; her daughter, Susan Drake and her husband, Ron, of Arroyo Grande, California, and their two sons, JB and Lee; her son, David Underwood and his partner, Amanda, of Reno, Nevada, and his two sons, Scott and Erik; her daughter, Sally Weimer and her husband, Shawn, of Fallbrook, California, and their daughter, Kelly Ma, and her husband, Daniel, and their two children, Zoe and Elon, of Oceanside, California.
An outdoor service will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church, in Fallbrook, California on December 13, 2020, at 1:00 p.m.
A private ceremony will be held for immediate family at Miramar National Cemetery, where Casey's husband, Roger, is interred.
