Carolyn's obituary
It is with love and gratitude that we remember the life of Minnie Carolyn Reiblich, who passed away on March 19, 2021, in Tucson, Arizona, with her two children by her side. Carolyn was born on January 23, 1951, and raised in Lubbock, Texas, before leaving at the age of 17. Her journey led her to fall in love with the beauty of the Sonoran Desert, which she made her home.
The daughter of John T. (“JT”) and Marie Graham, Carolyn grew up among a large family surrounded by her siblings, aunts, uncles, and many cousins – fostering a deep-rooted sense of connection that remained with her throughout her life. Carolyn was preceded in death by her beloved mother, her father, stepmother Thelma, sister Lawanda, brother John and half-sisters Dorothy and Juanita. She was married to George Reiblich, Dennis ("Butch") Downey, Harold Bell, and Ron Guglielmo, all of whom she shared many beautiful moments of life with.
Carolyn attended Lubbock High School and proudly graduated with honors from the University of Arizona before later earning her Master’s degree in Education. She dedicated nearly 20 years of her life to teaching kindergarten at Picacho Elementary School, where she was adored by generations of children. She received recognition for her work as an educator, and her kindness touched many lives in the local community. Teaching wasn’t just her profession—it was her gift. She was a champion for her students, a firm believer in the potential of every child and in making them feel safe, valued, and loved. Carolyn retired in 2013, leaving behind a legacy as a teacher and mentor.
Carolyn’s vibrant personality complemented her sweet, welcoming nature, endearing her to many. She was outgoing and fun-loving, with a playful sense of humor and an independent spirit that made her unafraid to speak her mind. She brightened a room with her enduring beauty, the sparkle in her bright blue eyes, and a Texan charm that was uniquely hers. Carolyn had a way of making you feel at home in her presence, with an endless supply of stories, quirky sayings, and a twang that never completely faded.
Throughout her life, Carolyn carried hardships and loss with remarkable grace, resilience and determination – forging a life rich with love, laughter, and hope. She embraced meeting new people and making friends, leading with compassion and generosity, never hesitating to offer care and support to someone in need. She loved being active, traveling, enjoying music, exploring the outdoors, attending church, and cultivating an inviting home. Some of her fondest memories, often recalled, were of the many trips she took with loved ones — and of other adventures that included a summer spent as an au pair overseas.
Above all, Carolyn found her deepest happiness in her family. Her children were the greatest joys of her life, and she treasured spending time with her grandchildren, Elyse, Lily, and Griffin.
Carolyn is survived by her children, Gena Downey and Graham Reiblich, her three grandchildren, former husband George, and her cousin and dearest lifelong friend Jane Miller. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of all those who were lucky enough to know the warmth of her love, the kindness and joy she shared, and the strength she embodied. She is profoundly missed and will forever be remembered and deeply loved for the perfectly complicated and beautiful person she was.
A celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held on Sunday, April 13 at 2 pm at 3996 West Ironwood Hill Drive in Tucson. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests a donation in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association.
