Carolyn's obituary
The family of Carolyn Jo Smith mourns the loss of a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Carolyn was born on May 6, 1943, in St. Louis, MO, and passed away peacefully on July 25, 2023, in Martinsburg, WV.
Carolyn was a Navy wife of 20-plus years and married to her sailor for 39 years until his passing in 2004. Together, they explored dozens of states as a family, with a particular focus on the history of the area.
Carolyn was an artist in every sense of the word. Her talents spanned clothing and costume creation, quilting, tabletop figure painting, paper art, embroidery, and professional wedding cake creation. She was a huge science fiction and fantasy fan, attending conventions and fairs nationwide in award-winning creations made alongside her children. Her passion for Halloween was shared in the decorations and characters brought to life each year for her children and grandchildren.
Carolyn will be remembered for her kind and gentle nature, love of life and learning, faith, and generosity. Her legacy is her ability to make everyone feel loved, needed, and welcomed.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter Teddi R Johnson, daughter Patti C Maxwell, daughter Kathi C Gardiner, son Joseph A Smith, sister Wanda L Wolf, grandchildren Jacob W Johnson, Rae L Johnson, Andrew J Maxwell, Gabrielle M Maxwell, and Holly N Maisch.
Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1050 Lovelace Way, Martinsburg, WV 25401, on August 19, 2023. Contact her daughter at theodora.quennell@gmail.com for arrangement details. Please observe the church and property no smoking policy.
The family would like to thank the Celebration Villa of Martinsburg, WV staff for enhancing Carolyn's quality of life in her final years and Hospice of the Panhandle for supporting the family in her peaceful passing. A special thanks to her nursing and aid staff for their exceptional care, evidence of trust, and for supporting the family during the difficult decisions.
Carolyn will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. May her memory be a blessing.
