Carolyn's obituary
Carolyn J. Hollar, 79, of Sun Lakes, Arizona, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 27th, 2021, at Hospice of the Valley – Dobson Home in Chandler, AZ.
The first of two memorial services will be held at 1pm on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at Chandler United Methodist Church in Chandler, Arizona. The second service will be held in Iowa on a date to be determined.
Carolyn was born on October 8, 1942, to Clarence and Delorius (Goodspeed) Straub in Oak Park, Illinois. After graduating from Fort Madison High School in 1960, she went on to study nursing at Deaconess School of Nursing in St. Louis, MO. After 25 years in nursing, she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Allied Health Arts and continued a 12-year career as a family counselor. In 2001, she completed Seminary at St. Paul School of Theology and became a Pastor for the United Methodist Church and served in that position for 12 years.
In 1960, she met Gary, and they wed in 1963, going on to have three children, Jane, David, and Julie. They enjoyed making lifelong friends while living in many different places in Iowa, Minnesota, and Arizona.
After retiring in 2013, Carolyn spent her time with Gary in Arizona. She enjoyed doing puzzles, baking, travelling, and visiting with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends. They also enjoyed travelling to her favorite vacation destination, San Diego.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws, and one great-grandchild. She is survived by her husband Gary, daughter Jane Cummings and husband Chris of Mesa, AZ, son David Hollar and friend Anita Schroeder of Dallas Center, IA, daughter Julie Johnson and husband Chris of Gilbert, AZ, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
