Carolyn “Carol”'s obituary

With great sadness, we remember the life of Carolyn “Carol” Hynes “Burdette” who was born on May 17, 1947, and entered into rest on January 9, 2026. A woman who touched the lives of many, her legacy of kindness and willingness to help those in need will forever be cherished.

Carol is survived by her son, Michael Hynes-Adkins; daughter, Lisa Spaar; son-in-laws, Jonathan Barter, Eric Spaar, and Jim Schlegel; grandson, Sequoia Spaar; sister-in-law, Mary K Hynes; nieces, Royceanne Hazera, Ruthie Gallaso, and Catherine Hynes; and nephews, William Fries, Timothy Hynes, Shean B Slyder, Matthew B Slyder, and Nathaniel Slyder. She was predeceased by her parents, William Wellington Hynes and Helen M “Ballweg” Hynes; her siblings Eleanor “Ellie” Hynes-Fries, William C Hynes, Nancy J Hynes, and Mary H Hynes “Moss”; ex-spouses, Richard W Burdette and Norman “Butch” Harbaugh Jr.; and her sister-in-law, Cathy E. Slyder.

Carol completed her high school education at St. John of God Roman Catholic Church, Carleton Avenue, Central Islip, NY in 1965. Her life was marked with profound moments of joy and sorrow. She warmly embraced motherhood, welcoming her children into the world in 1968 and 1981, and later her grandchild in 2001. She was married in 1967 to Richard W Burdette, and after their separation in 1973, she met Norman “Butch” Harbaugh Jr. in 1980.

Devoted to her faith, Carol was an active attendee of Bethany United Methodist Church-Marysville, PA. She found pleasure in simple, joyful things - indulging in her favorite foods like spaghetti, mashed potatoes, and chocolate or enjoying a cold glass of Pepsi, Orange, or Coke soda.

A lover of literature, Carol adored books by John Grisham, James Patterson, Dame Agatha Christie, and Mary Higgins Clark. Music played a special role in her life, with Bobby Darin's "Dream Lover", "Amazing Grace", and "It is well" being among her favorite tunes. Her preferred TV Shows included MASH, Chicago Fire, Price is Right, Let’s make a deal, The Last of Summer Wine, and Judge Mathis, Judge Millian. She also enjoyed movies such as Black Dahlia, Sleeping Beauty, Red Rose, Rose Red, and My Best Friends Wedding. One of her favorite pieces of art was her own drawings of trees made out of people’s names.

In her spare time, she found joy in playing Phase 10, Rummy, and Candy Crush. Her preferred recreational activities included spending time with loved ones, friends, and her church congregation, watching TV, and online shopping. London, United Kingdom and Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom were among her favorite holiday destinations, while she found comfort and community in local spots like the Marysville Diner and Georges Subs & Pizza.

Carol was dedicated to causes including Mental Health & Mental Retardation, Homelessness, Cancer, and aiding those in need. Her personable nature, characterized by warmth, compassion, dedication, love, kindness, selflessness, giving, and an ability to bring smiles to others made her a beacon of light in the lives of many. She imparted wisdom, teaching others to be of service, to love, to be a friend, and to value dedication, loyalty, honesty, respect, and above all, faith and family.

Among her greatest achievements, she served on the MH/MR Board with her son, made the deans list, and provided invaluable help with PACT, Overcomers, and Wholemind. Her life serves as a testament to selflessness and loving service to others.

A memorial service for Carolyn “Carol” Hynes “Burdette” will be held on February 21, 2026, at 1:00 PM in Marysville. As we mourn her physical departure, we celebrate the exceptional life she led, remembering her as a pillar of strength and love in our community.
