Background

Mom traveled to Malawi with the International Foundation for Education and Self-Help, IFESH, after she retired from teaching.

She was to teach special education practices at a teachers' college there. But when the program did not materialize, she taught parents instead, so that they could teach their children at home.

Carole fell in love with Malawi. She loved to hear what Pamoza International was doing for rural families and communities there.

About Pamoza International

Pamoza International is a Christian non-profit organization working in Malawi, Africa. Our mission is to share the Gospel and alleviate poverty and suffering through educational improvements, healthcare, economic empowerment, and food security. Pamoza means "together". We work together with the people we serve to help transform the lives of children and families in rural Malawi.

Our motto is based on an African proverb: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."

Answered by a team member at Pamoza International

  • What is your mission?

Pamoza's mission is to unite people in alleviating suffering and despair through Christian outreach and discipleship, meeting basic human needs, establishing self-reliance, and promoting environmental stewardship.

  • How are donations used?

Donations are used to support our programs in rural Malawi. These programs include scholarships for students, medicine for our clinic, school breakfast program, adult literacy education, and farmer training and education.

  • What can be done with a $100 donation?

$100 is enough for us to:
    1) provide school breakfast to 10 students ALL SCHOOL YEAR or
    2) support a family with seed, fertilizer, and agricultural training for 6 months or
    3) support a student to attend 6 months of high school (not free in Malawi) or
    4) provide medicine for one of our clinic days.

  • What progress has been made already thanks to your donors?

We have been able to reach 460 villages in rural Malawi and have improved access to food, education, physical health, and spiritual health. We partner with 20 elementary schools in Malawi and provide school breakfast for 5 of those schools, feeding nearly 2,500 students each school day. We have also trained more than 1,400 farmers on sustainable agricultural practices. We have reached more than 15,000 people with the gospel, supported more than 300 of our most vulnerable families with extra, purchased thousands of medicine for our clinic, hired a full time community nurse, provided immunizations to nearly 200 children, and have nearly 2,000 people participating in village-based Bible study groups we started.

  • What is the history of your organization?

Pamoza International was founded by Dr. Mike Mtika who is a native of Malawi and a sociology professor at Eastern University. Dr. Mtika developed the vision for Pamoza which is based on working together, or pamoza, with community members to come up with solutions to improve their quality of life. The work began in 2004
