When I think of Carol, the Carol I knew in Hawaii in the mid-60s and the Carol I knew in Columbia a decade later, I remember her humor & her quick mind. The girl was funny and smart!
I’d enrolled at USC as a freshman in the ‘Mature Students’’ program for students 25 & older & in my second year, I persuaded her to take some classes with me. One night, after hours, we were in the USC Business School building, studying together for an upcoming exam when we realized we were alone and it was late! We chose , of course, to take the elevator. The ride was smooth for about 10 seconds, then, the lights went out, and the elevator shuddered and rocked before coming to a full stop. There was dead silence. What to do?!?! ( I don’t remember. I think we were too stunned to do anything except Maybe utter a choice word or two.) We were in pitch black darkness. This was before Security guards, before cell phones. After some interminably long minutes, the power came on, and the doors opened. We were between floors. Even though, we were over 25, we were still flexible enough to climb out (!), laughing all the while. (I don’t remember how we scored on the exam.)
We were great friends in those years. I miss knowing Carol is walking on the planet, but wherever she is, I’m sure she’s lighting up the place with her smiles and laughter.
She was a wonderful mother who fiercely loved her family. We know the family misses her terribly, and hope they are finding solace in the memories.
