Carol's obituary

Carol J. Stegall (née Houston), 81, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend passed away on Ash Wednesday, March 2, 2022 surrounded by loved ones. She was born to Thornton and Zertha Houston on March 5, 1940 in Joplin, Missouri.  Carol graduated from Central Missouri State University and married the late Dr. Ronald Stegall in 1963. They moved to Packanack Lake in Wayne NJ, and were blessed with two children, eventually making their way to Haworth, NJ where Carol lived until her passing.  Carol was predeceased by her beloved brothers Dan and Mike Houston.

Carol taught elementary school in Independence, Missouri and later in life served as an executive assistant at The Presbyterian Church (USA) and the American Baptist Church in New York, NY, from which she retired.

Carol was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ of Haworth, New Jersey where she volunteered throughout the years. She was an advocate for racial and social justice issues, a lover of animals and nature, an avid reader, an excellent baker and loved music, art, dance, sports and travel.  Carol always welcomed to her  home those who might be alone for the holidays and was a devoted grandmother and friend whose laughter was as contagious as her generous spirit.  

Carol is survived by her children: Melody Duffy and Mark Stegall and his wife, Eva; six grandchildren: Laura, Holly, Keira, Kirsten, Sean, and Alexis; six great grandchildren: James, Kara, Riley, Joey, Roman and Nora; and her sister and best friend Glinda Cooper, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 11:00AM at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Haworth New Jersey, 276 Haworth Avenue, Haworth, NJ 07641, followed by a Commitment of Ashes in the church’s Memorial Garden and a luncheon in the church’s Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to one of Carol’s favorite charities: First Congregational United Church of Christ, Haworth, NJ, The Closter Nature Center (www.closternaturecenter.org) The American Heart Association, or to the charity/foundation of your choosing.
