Personal note from C. Ren Kolar

I can't believe I'm writing here to update about my mom, Carol Kolar's passing. It still feels so unreal, but I know you are all experiencing the same shock. For those who have not yet heard, Mom passed away on June 22, 2023 while we were vacationing together in Vancouver Canada. We were having a great trip, hiking around, seeing sights, taking water taxis, spending time together as family until the day she became ill. She was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis with complications and quickly went into septic shock and passed within 48 hours. I was lucky enough to be with her, holding her hand and patting her as she passed gently and peacefully from this life. She knew we were there and knew she was surrounded by love. I told her all of you loved her greatly.

In this grief it is helpful to remember the amazing times we've shared. She spent so many years of her adult life loving her work with Gloria and the lab. All of you were her other family and were so very important to her...she loved every one of you immensely. Some of you I've never met or maybe met a couple of times, however I feel I know you so well through her eyes. Please know how important you were. Her book and card club friends too...she enjoyed her many get togethers with you all.

Then after retirement 5 years ago she moved closer to us in Ashland Oregon. I can't tell you what a blessing. While here she became more than family and the great mom she was...she became my best friend. We had dinner multiple times each week, went to events, played games, watched wildlife, took trips to Arizona (hi Eula and Barb), New York and Bermuda, San Francisco, camping adventures (ok my mom stayed in cabins :), and this recent trip to Vancouver BC.

In Ashland she met her "pod". You all have been amazing support and friends to her. Yet another extended family of friends. They also had dinners, went to concerts and picnics in the park, played games, walked dogs (who by the way all LOVED my mom immensely even though she is allergic to animals lol), and enjoyed time together.

There are so many more. Our blood family and childhood friends, friends from Wisconsin that kept in touch after all of these decades. That says a lot about her and about all of you as well. We were all so lucky to have been touched by my mom. Some of you have such strong bonds with my mom. Deb and your clan who spoke so often, Roberta and the vast Hoffman family, there are so many I can't list everyone but please know that doesn't diminish your importance to her and to us.

She will be missed beyond belief. The hole in my heart and I'm sure many of yours is immense. But I believe she is still with us. Please talk to her. When you see a butterfly or some unusual wild animal in your area...say hi to her. She loved nature, loved watching the deer and bear and turkeys and critters that frequented her yard weekly. I will continue to watch them for her. I love you mom. Gabbi Michelle and I love you more than you can know.

Please feel free to share memories, connect with each other or us here. I can also be reached at my email renkolar20@gmail.com. Thank you all for listening and my apologies for having to share this news.

With love

Ren (aka Chrissie), Carol's daughter.

Update from Aug. 19, 2024

Hi all
This will be my final post on this site. Thank you all so much for sharing sweet stories about my mom both publicly and privately. My mom is no less missed as time has gone by, but the pain is gently transferring into beautiful memories and more reasons to celebrate her. I'm so grateful for all of the beautiful times we shared. The Space X launch was amazing. For those who missed it, here is a link to watch the recording: https://videos.space.com/m/je… Vandenberg Space Station is so often fogged in in the summers, but not on Friday! We had a beautifully clear day. The sound and vibration and feel of it all was magical. And it felt like such a great celebration of my mom. Thank you all for sharing this journey. Sending lots of love and hugs and wishes for you all to share beautiful memories with your families and friends and to celebrate life to its fullest. With love...Ren

Update from July 17, 2024

Good morning. Just wanted to update everyone about my mom's flight. We were set to go this week however the last Falcon 9 rocket that launched ended up exploding or disintegrating once in space, so the FAA grounded all of these types of rockets. As such, we are on pause. We are 2nd in line to launch once flights resume but we don't know exactly when that will be. At this point it sounds like August will be our time. I didn't want the system to keep updating and notifying you every time we change the date so I picked 12/31 just as a place holder...it will mostly likely be well before that! Once we have a more concrete time again I'll update with specifics. For now however we will wait our turn and my mom will fly when the timing is right. Enjoy your days and hopefully we'll get that send off soon. Ren

Update from May 31, 2024

So happy to say we finally have my mom's memorial garden planted. Some of you sent money to do something in her honor and we had planned to redo the front planter bed with my mom this spring. It was something we all looked forward to. So we have done that with many of her favorite plants and some rocks that she loved. Feels good to have such a sweet memorial that we can see every day. Thank you to those who contributed to this...I know she'd love it. I'll add a picture as well.

Update from March 12, 2024

Hi all
Just wanted to let you know that mom's space flight is getting closer to becoming a reality. Updates are always available at celestis.com. She will be on the Harmony flight which is now slated for July (they say July 1, but it is still likely to change). Mom's bio/memorial is now posted on the site as well. https://www.celestis.com/laun… (you may have to copy and paste this link to your browser). At any rate...we are excited to give my mom her send off and whatever day she takes off we'll be there. Will continue to update as we get more info. Hope you all enjoy your days to the fullest!

Update from Aug. 28, 2023

Hi all

I just wanted to give an update about plans for my mom's memorial.

We spent a lot of time thinking about what my mom would want and how best to honor her. With her love of books, science and space and after having many conversations about things we’d do if we could…space travel was at the top of her list. That and the northern lights. If anyone gets to see that spectacular vision, please think of my mom…soak in the moment for her and say a prayer that she’s there enjoying it with you.

As for space flights…not many get that opportunity in life, but for my mom it is possible for her now.

She loved space so much…loved reading books about space, was constantly on Nasa’s web site looking at their daily pictures and reading about discoveries. When the experiment that she was involved with went up to the ISS with NASA she was beyond thrilled as were we all.

So we are giving her a send off to space.

She will be flying on the Harmony flight with Celestis. Celestis.com. As this is a real commercial rocket with scientific payloads, the schedule will fluctuate. Right now we know that the flight won’t occur before February 2024. For those who wanted to attend the take off in California, that is possible. Tickets are $150 for the day. For those who can’t come (which we fully understand especially given that we may not know the date until several weeks prior and even those dates can change due to weather etc), the launch will be available via webcast. I will be posting the link and updates here on Everloved.com as we get closer. If you’d like me to email you directly with updates please write me at renkolar20@gmail.com and I can certainly do that. I will likely email those updates in a group email so let me know if you're not ok with that.

Once she is in space, she will continue for at least one full orbit of earth, but depending upon the payload on board, she’ll be up there for months or years. Her flight can be tracked on the satellite tracker at Celestis.com. She will orbit until the satellite re-enters the atmosphere, harmlessly vaporizing like a shooting star in final tribute.

What I know for sure is my mom would love this. And even better would be if those she loved and cherished raise a glass of champagne, kombucha or bubbly water to her in celebration of her life well lived. We will be there toasting and cheering her on and would enjoy all of you doing the same, whether on site or from afar.

I can’t imagine a better way to set her free. And for those of us who think about her often, how great that we can look to the skies, watch the stars and imagine seeing her passing over head. Please join us in this celebration in whatever manner suits you best.

With love

Ren and family.
