Carol's obituary

Carol Ann Hess Layton passed away surrounded by friends and love ones in Lake Havasu, AZ, on October 01, 2025, at age 96. Born on June 29, 1929, Carol was a comfort to many and a joy to all, most of her time was spent taking care of her family, her friends, and her community.

She grew up in Ogden, Utah. After she graduated from Ogden High School in 1947, she went to Weber State College and played women’s basketball. She worked at the Tooele Army Depot, typing and sending out military orders.

When Reuell Hess proposed to her the first time, she said, "No".  He eventually convinced her to marry him, and they were wed on March 21, 1952. They lived in a small house in Ogden, Utah, where they had 3 kids, two girls, Kathy and Karen, and their son Ron. Then she moved to a home in Nordic Valley, Utah.  She said it was one of the most beautiful places she had ever lived. It was a property large enough for the family to have a garden and to own horses. Together, they ran Roto-Rooter with an office on Pennsylvania Avenue in Ogden. After Reuell passed in 1984, she moved to a condo in Riverdale, Utah.

While she lived in Riverdale, she got into square dancing and met Loyal Layton. They were square dance partners and decided to become life partners by getting married in 1989.  After Loyal retired, they moved to Lake Havasu, Arizona, where she could live with her sister, Myrna. Carol and Loyal had many adventures together until he passed in 2013.

Throughout her life, she was very creative and artistic. She crafted and painted ceramics, knitted blankets, and sewed clothes for her grandkids.

She traveled with her family and never wanted to miss out on anything. She played card games and board games with her family, and taught most of her grandkids games like Skip-Bo, Hearts, Pinochle, and King’s Corner. She always had a competitive spirit.

A loving and wonderful woman until the very end, she will be greatly missed. Carol is survived by her son, Ronald Hess; granddaughter Nicole (Brad) Clark; grandson Peter (Jami) Mockaitis; grandson Curtis KC (Colleen) Harris; granddaughter Monica Adams; granddaughter Tiffany (Robert) Nolan; granddaughter Stacy (Bryan) Howick; granddaughter Marlise Weyburn; granddaughter Shannon (Matthew) Moon; granddaughter Megan Mockaitis; granddaughter Hilary (Tom) Hamilton; granddaughter Corinne Thompson; and 32 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren
