Carol's obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden passing of Carol Leilani Dion on January 30, 2025 in Pacifica, Ca.
Carol, the eldest of two children, was born on November 3, 1942 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Esther and Carl Rogers. She grew up in Honolulu, but had many fond memories spending time with her extended family in Hilo, Hi. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1960. In 1965 along with her best friend Linda O'Brien, she began a new adventure and moved to San Francisco, California.
Shortly after, she began working for United Airlines, which sparked her lifelong love of travel. There she met Phillip Dion. The two later married, settled down in Pacifica, and joined St Peter's Catholic Church. They had two children, Scott and Andrea. Carol left United Airlines to become a stay-at-home mom. The family became involved with the St Peter’s Community and made many strong friendships. Carol even learned to ski during one of several trips to Tahoe with families from St Peter’s.
Carol enjoyed hosting holiday dinners for friends and family. She always made sure to spread her attention among all her guests to make sure everyone was included. Her favorite part of the evening was when her brother, Carl, would bring out his guitar and they would have a family sing along.
Once Scott and Andrea entered school, she returned to the travel industry, but made a point to never miss a baseball or basketball game. Carol began working Hawaiian Airlines, where she stayed for almost 30 years. Carol worked her way up to being the Assistant Station Manager at the Hawaiian Airlines SFO office and prided herself on providing excellent customer service and spreading Aloha. Many passengers would look out for her on future trips or send her cards and gifts to thank her for the extra effort she made to help them with their flight. Carol also worked in the Linda Mar Safeway Bakery for many years, where she enjoyed handing out cookies to the youngest shoppers.
Carol included her children in her love of travel and took them on several trips a year. They went everywhere from driving down the coast to pick Olallieberries to flying to Jamaica to go snorkeling.
Carol and Phil later amicably divorced, but remarried shortly before Phil passed away in 2019.
When Carol retired from Hawaiian Airlines, she maintained a close group of girlfriends from the airline industry. They would travel to places like Waco, Texas to see where Chip and Joanna's show was filmed or Homer, Alaska the home port of Deadliest Catch. She always looked forward to her get togethers with the Girls.
Ever the social butterfly, Carol joined the Odd Fellows Apollo Lodge and volunteered at the Doelger Senior Center. Carol enjoyed taking part in the group's many activities and all of the new friends she made. Everything from mystery trips to Giants games. Carol always seemed to be going somewhere. She eventually moved into a leadership role within Apollo. She held the offices of Apollo Treasurer, Apollo Noble Grand, District Deputy Grand Master and sat on the Board of Trustees. Carol developed many close friendships and travel partners through Apollo.
Not one to take time to slow down and mostly for the social interaction, Carol began working for Metro Shore Services assisting cruise line customers with smoothly moving through the check in process. She enjoyed being able to provide outstanding customer service and helping people begin their adventures on the right foot, but mostly she enjoyed the camaraderie of her coworkers.
Carol had a large family originating out of Hilo, Hawaii. She loved returning the islands to visit family and her favorite spots to shop or eat. A trip to Hilo was not complete if she didn't return with a box of cone sushi or flaky donuts. Most of all she loved sitting on Auntie Mona's back porch or in Paula and Ronnie's living room being with family, eating good food and singing nostalgic songs.
Carol is preceded in death by her mother - Esther Wilhelm, father - Carl Rogers, step-father - Fred Wilhelm, husband - Phillip Dion. She is survived by her son and daughter - Scott Dion and Andrea Dion, her brother - Carl Rogers, her Aunt - Mona Wong and multiple nieces, nephews, cousins, her beloved inherited Pomeranian – Trudi, and numerous friends whom she considered family.
A celebration of life will be held on March 29th 2025 at the South San Francisco Elks Lodge at noon. RSVP’s are appreciated, but not required.
