Carol's obituary
In Loving Memory of Carol Jean Bregant
July 23, 1945 – May 4, 2025
On Sunday, May 4, 2025, Carol Jean Bregant, 79, of Festus, Missouri, passed away peacefully, surrounded by those who loved her most, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
True to her nature, she waited until the perfect quiet moment—when I had stepped outside to check on a dog and her nephew Erik was in the kitchen—to let go. She was still protecting us, right to the end. She always did.
Carol was born to Paul and Elizabeth Brewster on July 23, 1945, in Farmington, Missouri. After graduating from Farmington High School in 1963, she moved to St. Louis and began a long career in data entry, later earning her real estate license in 1983.
She married Edmund Bregant in 1972 in French Village, Missouri, and together they raised their daughter, Lisa until Edmunds's death in 1980.
Carol retired from Western Union in 2008 after 39 years of dedicated work. In retirement, she enjoyed photography, painting, reading, and spending time with her grand-dogs. She was creative, curious, generous, and endlessly patient. Her imagination and “resourcefulness,” as she liked to call it, never stopped.
Carol was my mom, best friend, and partner in many adventures. She loved and accepted everyone deeply, always standing up for what was right. She had a quiet strength, a fire when needed, and never tolerated hate or unkindness. She was proud to be “Aunt Purple” to her great-great-nieces and nephews and absolutely adored being “Nanny” to her grand-dogs—and to every dog who crossed our threshold. She gave them her whole heart, and they gave it right back.
Even after nearly 10 years of living with Alzheimer’s, and watching the disease slowly take her piece by piece, it’s still unfathomable that she’s truly gone. But today, she is finally free—free of pain, confusion, and fear. She’s whole again. She’s at peace. And for that, I am so very grateful.
Carol was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ed; her parents, Paul and Elizabeth; her brother, Paul “Buddy” Brewster; her sister, Janet Nolen; her brother-in-law, Ronald Nolen; her brothers-in-law, Dr. Robert Bregant and Gary Bregant; her sister-in-law, Barbara Bregant; her nephew, Kent Nolen; her niece, Linda Huff; and her great-nephew, Anthony Morton Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Lisa; grand-dogs, Delia, Chewy, and Joey; great nephew, Erik Morton; nieces, Linda (Paul) Young, great niece Tiffany (Jonathan Quiello) Morton, and Susan (Jeff) Raaz; great-nieces, Destiny (Christopher) Watson, Summer (Jay Graham) Nolen, and Chelsea (David) Shoebottom; great-great-nephews, Oliver Watson, Janson Graham, Ellis Shoebottom, Josh Raaz, and Jeremy Raaz; and great-great-nieces, Aryah Watson, Natalie Graham, Jolie Shoebottom, and Lenora Kate Shoebottom.
Carol chose to donate her body to medical research. As was her wish, there will be no funeral, but we will honor her with a small Celebration of Life around her birthday in July.
She had the most beautiful smile. I will miss her forever.
Her favorite Bible verse was 1 Corinthians 13:4–8, as she always embodied the kind of love it describes—patient, kind, and enduring.
“Love is patient, love is kind… It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”-1 Corinthians 13:4–8
