Mi mami Carmen Cowan passed away at the age of 82 on February 23, 2025 after a long battle with Dementia. She had 2 rounds of hospice care, the last one starting in October 2024. She is now at peace.
>Carmen was born to Angel Modesto Loy and Dulce Maria Acosta on October 18, 1942 in the small province of Las Villas, Cuba. She was raised with 4 sisters and 2 brothers in a rural farm near a river where she said she liked to play and where they all had to bathe and wash her clothes. She was only able to complete grade school as her family needed her to work, so she helped provide babysitting to her neighbors. Due to government turmoil, she was required to work for the agriculture industry during her teenage years. She lived in Cuba until 1975 where she sought political asylum and flew out to live with a cousin in New York for a short time. She later moved back to Miami, where her family members settled around West Miami, near MIA. One day at Key Biscayne beach, she met Eduardo Cowan who also moved from Cuba recently and they started a relationship. In 1977, at the age of 35, she gave birth to her first and only daughter, Emery Cowan, in Miami Beach Mt. Sinai Hospital. In October 23, 1978 she and Eduardo married. She worked for a few years as a seamstress in a factory then remained a stay at home mom. Eduardo passed away on August 20, 2014 at the age of 86 from cancer, she was his primary caregiver with the help of home health; they had been married 36 years. They lived in the same home in Hialeah since the 70's until she had to move to Fairfield, CA in 2019 to be close to her daughter due to her declining health.
Carmen was a loyal servant to God, first and foremost. She loved the church, singing hymns, and loved sharing the love and warmth her faith with as many people as possible. She was a part of several churches lastly with Iglesia La Gloria de Dios Internacional in Hialeah, FL. She now joins her husband, sisters, and parents in Heaven. She is survived by loving family members, including her daughter, Emery, son in law, Enrique, and two granddaughters, London and Celeste.
