Words cannot describe how saddening it is that you are no longer with us. I remember starting off as a student and coming into your office in tears (overly dramatic) thinking I failed my classes. Only for you to drag me back in the office days later to show me that I not only passed but got good grades. The laughs we had about it. You always kept tissues in your office in case I stormed in again which I did many times. You took me to do my driving test in your own car because I had no other way to do it. I remember the days we would run on the track together after work completely out of breath looking exhausted. You were always willing to help others. You didn't just do advisement. You listened to your students and their problems. You weren't a therapist yet still gave a listening ear because you cared about what your students were going through. You loved to gulf and listen to the radio. You enjoyed listening to other stations. For you it was the simple joys. I will miss your hugs and the kindness you showed not just to me but everyone around you. You were a mentor to me always giving me advice whether I liked it or not. You knew that students needed to choose their own path. You will be forever in my heart ❤

To the Herrera Family,
My heartfelt condolences.
I pray that God would comfort you during this difficult time, I pray he will turn your mourning to dancing and your sorrow into joy. I pray that you will find strength from the beautiful memories Carlos left with us. Finally, I pray that God will send angels to encamp around you and give you peace.
My family and I will continue to pray for you.

I have many fond memories with Carlos in SUNY New Paltz! He always encouraged the Latinos to get involved! He was very instrumental in organizing many student events in the mid ‘70s. Condolences to the family.
I will miss Carlos because he encouraged me not to give up and not get overwhelmed with my classes. I am thankful that I had the privilege of knowing and having him as my Adviser in SSD. He had such a wonderful heart, was so principled and honest, I will never forget him in my entire life. He helped alleviate my fears of college at the beginning of my first semester. He counseled me and ensured I had the necessary accommodations to help me succeed. He worked with the blind and visually impaired community in his early years, so he particularly understood my needs as a blind person. It is sad he can’t be there for my graduation, but when I graduate from QCC, it will be for him, because I know he would have been proud of me.
Here is a poem which I have written, specially dedicated to him.
C – Care, Carlos cared so much for us his students.
A – Attentive, he was always attentive to our needs.
R – Respect, he treated everyone with tremendous respect.
L – Love, Carlos loved his job, because he had the opportunity to serve students with disabilities.
O – Outstanding, the service he provided as an Academic Adviser was truly outstanding.
S – Sincere, he was sincere and genuinely wanted to see all his students succeed.

MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE AND MAY HIS MEMORY BE A BLESSING TO ALL

To The Family of Carlos Herrera:

Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences for your loss! I will always remember Carlos as the ultimate professional with the smooth "radio personality" voice who always knew what to say to calm things down in the midst of a frustrating situation! His words of wisdom, friendly and welcoming personality; and fantastic sense of humor will truly be missed forever! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers!

Sincerely,
Anthony Phifer
I did not know Carlos, but I know he made a significant impact in the lives of students with disabilities. I wanted to contibute so that people don't forget the hard work it takes to be an educator. He left the world better than he found it.

As some people journey through life, they leave footprints of kindness and inspiration. We can all look back and clearly see the trail you left behind. For it is with that trail of empathy and hope that we will continue to follow. May your soul rest in peace Carlos and perpetual light shine upon you forever.

The students at Queensborough Community College loved working with Carlos and his absence will be felt. He was dedicated to the students and always of great assistance and support to them. Carlos will be missed.
Carlos and I worked together as Employment Specialists at The Lighthouse for several years in the early 90's. In his first week on the job he went with me to visit a client who was having trouble with his CCTV Magnifier on his internship; the device's reception was terrible! Client had returned the CCTV Magnifier to the vendor for repairs and it came back with the message that there was nothing wrong with it! Carlos looked at it and noticed that the office was across the street from the Empire State Building; he took a piece of aluminum foil out of his bag, wrapped it round the device's antenna and reception was perfect! This was just the beginning of recognizing Carlos's unique problem solving skills, his ability to connect with clients and his wonderful sense of humor!

I am so sorry for your loss. Blessings to your family during this very difficult time in your lives. Carlos was so special, not just to his family, but to every life he touched. He has been called home to God, and will be missed in this world.
I didn’t know Charlie personally and may have only met him once. But, I knew him through his younger siblings as their beloved patriarch. My heart and prayers go out to his entire family. Rest in piece, Charlie, and admire your legacy from heaven’s perfect embrace.
