Carlos's obituary
Carlos G. Garcia, “Chuck” as he was known, passed away surrounded by his family on May 23, 2024 in Venice, Florida. He was born October 13, 1940 and grew up with his four siblings, Manuel, Melchor, Antonio, and Teresita in Bohol, Philippines.
Chuck met his wife Miriam in New York City at the wedding of his older brother Melchor. After a brief courtship in NYC they married in Bohol, Philippines. His eldest son Carlos G. Garcia, Jr. was born in Bohol where his circle of family blossomed. They moved to Long Island and welcomed three daughters; Georgina, Jasmin, and Rebecca, who they raised in Brentwood, NY. Chuck was always ready with what is now referred to as a “Dad joke”, but 50 years ago it was just our Papa’s BAD joke. He loved waking up early on Sunday mornings and serenading the family to karaoke before a Filipino breakfast of garlic fried rice and eggs.
Chuck was beloved by his friends and family. He graduated from the University of the Philippines (UP) and UP College of Law. He joined the prestigious Sigma Rho Fraternity, a Law-based fraternity at the University of the Philippines Diliman where he was elected the Grand Archon (head) in 1963. From then on no matter where in the world he was, he had an extended family.
Sigma Rho provided him with his second set of brothers that he maintained throughout his lifetime. In May 2023, Chuck attended the 60th anniversary celebration in Manila where he was honored as one of the greatest Grand Archons the fraternity ever had. In the tradition of Sigma Rho’s Chuck exemplified being a LEADER, SCHOLAR, GENTLEMAN, and WARRIOR
Chuck opened up his own law practice in Long Island, NY where he was known as a fierce yet friendly adversary always seeking the best results for his clients. He was friends with many judges, clerks and other attorneys. He charmed others by his wittiness and intellect. Chuck was known throughout the community and his clients for his ready smile and for putting their fears at ease.
In April 2020 he was hospitalized for COVID. A few months later he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. As he battled through cancer and multiple surgeries, he never lost his charm. Before he was transferred to hospice, a nurse, unable to get a good oxygen reading from a clip-on sensor on his finger or toes, asked if she could put the sensor on his ear and he responded, “If you think it looks stylish on me!”.
Chuck thoroughly enjoyed attending gatherings, full of friends from the New York Sigma Rho Chapter, Tanglaw, Knights of Rizal, and the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) Filipino Chapter.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents Melchor Garcia, Sr., and Rosario Garcia and his brothers Manuel (Trinidad), Melchor (Norma), and Antonio (Donna). He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Miriam Garcia, son; Carlos Garcia Jr; daughters; Georgina Garcia-Soiffer, MD (Ariel), Dr. Jasmin de Guzman, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army, Rebecca Garcia-Larson (Brad); grandchildren; Alitza, Eliana, Gavriel, Kayuga, Zarahemla, Benicio, and Olivier; and sister, Teresita Azcona (Rogelio).
