Now she never has to stop dancing or laughing…..

Carla Nicole Gathings Newsome, cherished daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, cousin and friend, known for her love of dancing, horror movies, junk food, and bringing people together made her final transition after a long illness Thursday, November 14, 2024 at the age of 51. She was born Thursday, July 26, 1973 in Memphis, TN to Florean Gathings and the late Collins Newsome, Jr. Carla confessed Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age at Mt. Pisgah C.M.E. Church in Cayce, Mississippi and later joined St. Mark M.B. Church in Collierville, Tennessee.

Carla was known by many nicknames and titles – Nickie, Mama, Nana, Aunt Nickie, Boo, Nickie Rae and even Naughty Nickie. This was because she filled countless roles in numerous lives. She had a contagious sense of humor, a big heart, and always room for anyone in need of a roof over their head. With a twinkle in her light brown eyes and laughter on her lips, Carla embraced life with unbridled enthusiasm. Whether it was a backyard barbecue or a wild night on the town, she always knew how to turn up the fun. She will be deeply missed by all who shared a good time with her.

Carla attended Byhalia High School and Sheffield Vocational Technical School. She was a long-time, former employee of The University of Memphis and self-employed as a custodian.

Carla is survived by her loving mother, Florean Johnson; only, adored son Kelvin D. Hollins (Crystal); dear brother – Lorenzo Hearns (Diane) of Ingrams Mill, MS; sisters – Patricia Houston (Dedrick) and Sheila White (David); well-loved and precious grandchildren – Zoriah, Ziona, Kali, Kiari and Kaci; a host of nieces, nephews, family, friends and loved ones.

Carla lived her life the best she knew trying to help those she loved find joy in this mixed-up world. While our hearts mourn her loss, we take comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering. Let’s not cry because this life for her is over. Let’s smile because her life happened and we were blessed to be a part of it.
