Carl, was one of my oldest friends. We joined the Royal navy together as fresh faced 16 year olds. I can still remember the first time I met carl he came swaggering in the mess deck in only the way Carl could and plonked his bags down on the bed next to me and in his cockney accent introduced himself. We pretty much served our whole service together, HMS Raleigh training to HMS Hermes then onto HMS Dryad for our radar training. We then served on HMS Manchester for 3 years before being posted to HMS Warrior. carl was then posted to HMS diligence in the Falklands before leaving to set up life in the USA. I have many stories of our time together as you can imagine!! I can remember Carl's contempt of young officer who thought they were better than us ratings, until Carl kindly informed a certain officer one day that, no you are not better educated than me and reeled off all his academic achievements :-)..... He also I understand toted himself good with watercraft and boats.....but I can tell you his sense of direction and skill handling small boats leaves a lot to be desired....several Officers he was ferrying ashore in the Falkland's will testify to this as he ploughed the boat into the jetty and but them all on their asses and nearly overboard :-) A true friend who will be sorely missed. RIP my friend. Wayne 'smudge' Smith
