Carl's obituary
Carl Paul Prather passed away on March 27th, 2022 at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA. He was 38. Carl was born in April 1983 in Newton, MA with a glove and baseball in his hand. Even as a young child, Carl was an avid New England sports fan and began showing his talent on the field by playing baseball, earning the nickname "Yaz" after Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yaszstremski. His proudest moment was when he pitched a no-hitter. Carl graduated High School from Apponequet Regional High School in Lakeville, MA in 2001, where he had a tight-knit group of friends and was known for being an easy-going, energetic, and funny guy who lit up the room. Carl could always be counted upon for his effortlessly hilarious catchphrases that spread like wildfire as soon as they were heard.
A huge movie buff, Carl religiously followed everything going on in the world of cinema. He held a special love for the movies Jaws, The Godfather, and anything directed by Stanley Kubrick. In his twenties he studied Communication and Film at Bristol Community College, working towards his dream of becoming a Director. Carl believed living a simple and honest life was the key to happiness. He was always happiest when relaxing at his family cottage on Cape Cod, playing a round of golf with his friends, listening to music around the fire, and spending quality time with his family, especially during the holidays.
Carl always took pride in his work, especially when it allowed him to assist others in their journey toward recovery. He held several jobs as an Addiction Treatment Specialist including at SSTAR Recovery Center in Fall River, MA, and as a Youth Mentor and Operations Clerk for the Boys and Girls Club in Taunton, MA. Carl was actively involved in Alcoholics Anonymous for over 10 years in the Boston and Southeastern Massachusetts areas, often leading AA meetings and sharing his story of sobriety to help others in need of hope. He was known for his positive, helpful, and down-to-earth nature by all who knew him. In 2021, Carl became a State Certified Recovery Coach and was selected to work as a member of the Recovery Assistance Team with Mass & Cass at Boston Medical Center, a groundbreaking program in downtown Boston that works to provide shelter and addiction services for the homeless. Although Carl faced his fair share of struggles, he always kept an optimistic mindset, striving to use his life, experiences, and sense of humor to lift up those around him.
Carl was the devoted son of Marian and Pat Prather of Dupont, WA. Loving Brother and friend to Yvonne Mall of Fort Leonard Wood, MO, Guy Prather of Winthrop, MA, and Zach Prather, of Phoenix, AZ. Proud Uncle of Juniper and Rowan Mall, Devyn, and Elijah Prather, and Jaden and Joule Prather. His passing has left a hole in our lives and in our hearts; he will be greatly missed. "When a man's stories are remembered, then he is immortal." -Big Fish.
