Captain George's obituary

Captain  George William Kissenberth of Warren died January 12, 2022, on his 66th birthday at UVM Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont.

He was born January 12, 1956, in Staten Island, NY, the son of Captain George William Kissenberth Sr. and Ellen Ann Rendt.

Captain Kissenberth was married to Dr. Nanette Marie Wessel on September 2, 2007, at The Skinner Barn in Waitsfield, where family and friends gathered to celebrate their union. She survives at their home in Warren.

Captain Kissenberth was a third-generation New Jersey Sandy Hook harbor pilot, retiring in 2011. He and his wife, Dr. Nanette Kissenberth, then moved permanently to their home in Warren. During his career he piloted such iconic ships as the Queen Mary 2 and tankers filled with fuel under federal guard following 9/11 into New York Harbor.

Captain Kissenberth enjoyed snowboarding at Sugarbush and skiing at Mad River Glen. He enjoyed cross-country skiing at Ole's Cross Country Ski Center at the Warren Airport. He was an avid and accomplished sailor on Lake Champlain and built and flew large-scale remote-controlled aircraft with his son Riley Kissenberth.

He is survived by a daughter, Emily Anne Kissenberth of Burlington; a son, Riley Kissenberth of Sparta, NJ; a stepdaughter, Madison Wood of Burlington; and a sister, Joanna Kissenberth of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Captain George will most fondly be remembered as a loving husband and father and trusted friend, who took great pride in being there for those he loved.

A celebration of his life will be held sometime this summer for family and friends. Details will be announced at a later date.
