Background
Candy was devoted to the cyclist community in the San Francisco Bay area. Thousands of people benefited from her volunteer work. Candy's family welcomes donations in lieu of flowers, and your gift is a thoughtful way to carry on her support. It will be shared between two nonprofits she was connected to.
BIKE RESCUE:
A nonprofit founded in 2015 that is dedicated to saving bicycles from waste. Your gift helps Bike Rescue lift a burden of too many donated bikes from other nonprofits and community groups, who lack resources to fix them. Bike Rescue helps connect thousands of people with low cost bicycles. Other groups then get to focus on rides, classes, fundraisers and more. Continuing Candy's support for their mission will bring joy to the clients of many groups.
Candy was social media staff for Bike Rescue, with friends on staff including Tiff and Charlotte the CFO. Because of these relationships, Bike Rescue will receive the funds raised here, and they will share half with the next partner.
RICH CITY RIDES:
A nonprofit founded in 2012 for bicycle advocacy and to serve youth and families in Richmond CA. Your gift supports their project planning, civic engagement, and bicycle infrastructure advocacy. Rich City Rides works with youth, but the whole community benefits from safer, more accessible cycling. They do social rides, repair workshops, an Earn-a-Bike Program, park cleanups, and conscious food events, all promoting change and pride in the community.
Candy was close to the founder, Najari Smith, who met her at East Bay Bike Party when she came to his rescue after his bike was stolen, and welcomed him in as a volunteer.
Both nonprofits were asked how they might spend funds in Candy's name for things they don't have. Bike Rescue mentioned equipment to upcycle bike parts, and Rich City mentioned a wish for a rolling stage to host events. You can also donate directly to them through their websites if you wish to support their usual operation:
