I knew Cameron through April Carter, my sister in law, who was his cross country coach.  He was a very talented runner, but there was just something special about him besides all his obvious talents.  He was incredibly gifted from the inside out.  I didn't know him well, but I deeply grieve his loss to his family, and really to the world itself.

Cameron is the reason I am where I am today. He took me on as a mentor before I even started my undergrad at Notre Dame and I was still asking him for advice as a PhD student myself. He was an incredibly positive spirit and did things for the right reasons. I learned just as much about science from him as I did about life.

I hope whoever you are now that you are still 'living the dream'. This paper is dedicated to you.

Cameron I went to school with you and I remember you being so kind to me always. It may have seemed like a small act to you but it left a lasting impression on me. We lost a truly special person. Prayers for your family. You are in our thoughts.
I had the joy of teaching Cameron in 5th grade. When it came time to do animal reports he excitedly told me that he was going to do tuataras because he had studied them his entire life. I had to quickly scramble to find out what a tuatara was! I should have known right then that he would become a biologist!❤️

My heartfelt condolences to the family!
Only met Cameron briefly, but he made a very strong and positive impression on me; very sad to hear this news!
He will certainly be missed by many!

While living in Provo back in the early 2000s, I had the pleasure of meeting and becoming friends with Cameron and his roommates. We all sort of globbed together, our apartment and their apartment. We’d steal their California flag, they’d hold our cordless telephone hostage until said flag was returned, we’d hang out at their apartment listening or playing music, and so on. I suppose it’s typical college behavior.

Cameron was dynamic and multi-faceted. I could talk and laugh with him about both serious and silly things. I always enjoyed being around him because I liked to listen to him speculate about life and religion; he was inquisitive and so alive about it, curious without malice. It was discussion with a smile, and even without the verbiage, he could be found smiling and aggressively living life.

One memory that still stays with me was when Cameron and Joey came to visit me in the Bay Area while I was visiting my dad. It’s easily one of the best times of my life. Joey can attest, it was somehow epic to us early twenty-somethings, even though nothing too crazy happened. We spent time at the Golden Gate Park - eating, napping, feeding the pigeons, investigating vegetation (those beautiful flowers!), monuments, and people. We snapped plenty of pictures in San Fran, the park, and near my dad’s house. He brought his smile and his energy to simply have a good time and to live. Every time I go to San Fran and the GG Park, I think about him and Joey. I’m positive that will be true for the rest of my life. He’s touched a lot of people and places, and this is only one example.

I share this because I want his family to know a tiny sliver about how he lived and how he impacted me during our college years. I was fortunate to be around him and to call him my friend. Yes, until we all meet again. ❤️
I remember once watching in awe as Cameron diffused a fight at PHS by laughing. I wish I remembered more details, but it was a great example of his steering and positive personality. Another memory I have of him was when he decided he was going to hit it hard in cross country his senior year (I was a junior). He was a beast and improved the performance of the whole team. Once I remember my legs feeling numb as he pushed us at a six minutes place for 9 miles. We were always a little relieved when he was not at practice and we could relax a little bit :)
