Obituary for Calvin Nelson Harrub III
Calvin “Bud” Nelson Harrub III, 83, of Nashville, passed away on January 5th, 2025. He was born on Feb 1, 1941, to Calvin Nelson Jr. and Martha Paige Harrub in Nashville. His siblings were Betty Harrub Epps (Bill) (both deceased) and Brown Morgan Harrub (Fairy). After graduating from West High School, he went on to earn a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University.
Calvin married Catherine Tomlin Harrub and they had three sons: Calvin Nelson Harrub IV (deceased), Kevin Neal Harrub (Staci), and John Bradford Harrub (Melinda). In 1988 he married Nancy Van Atta. Nancy had five children: Tony (Sandra), Gary (Courtney), Becky Appleby (Larry), Cathy Brown (Gregg) and Robin King (Brent).
Calvin earned the Eagle rank in Boy Scouts as a young man. After a brief job working in a factory, Calvin entered the UT extension school in Nashville and worked at National Life Insurance Co. In 1973, he enrolled in the master’s program at Vanderbilt University. Upon graduation he served as a preacher for the United Methodist Church for more than 30 years all around middle Tennessee.
In addition to sharing his faith, he also served in the Bellevue Volunteer Fire Department, along with a variety of boards and agencies. In his spare time though out his life, Calvin enjoyed reading, listening to orchestral and Irish music, fishing, golfing, his dogs and experimenting in various forms of art including painting and stained glass. His last several years were spent playing cards and sharing meals with his dear companion Betty Mills. Calvin celebrated friendships and good food with church friends and a faith that he said, “binds us together.”
Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, sister Betty, son Calvin, and wife Nancy.
He is survived by his brother Brown Morgan Harrub (Fairy), his sons Kevin (Staci) and Brad (Melinda), six grandchildren: Noah, Will (Rachel), Grace Gladstone (Evan), Reese (Melanie), Claire, Luke; and two great grandchildren, Jackson, and Brooklyn. Additionally, Calvin is survived by five stepchildren (and their spouses), fifteen step grandchildren, eleven step great grandchildren and three step great, great grandchildren.
A celebration of life service will be held at Beech Cumberland Presbyterian Church at 3:00pm on January 25th.
