Caitlyn's obituary
Caitlyn Montoya passed away peacefully with her husband at her side on June 3rd, 2025. After a 19 month battle with triple-negative breast cancer. She was taken from this earth far too soon.
Born in Massachusetts to Paul and Mary Hemming, Caitlyn was raised in Montana, where she formed lasting bonds with friends in every season of her life. She met her husband, Michael Montoya, in high school, and the two quickly became inseparable. She graduated from Montana State University Billings in 2015 with a degree in business administration and went on to pursue a career in accounting, where she found an unexplainable love for balance sheets.
Caitlyn’s life was a beautiful balance between the comfort of her routine and the thrill of spontaneous adventure. It wasn’t unusual for her to text Michael while he was at work on a Friday morning asking if he had any plans made for the weekend - if not, she’d be heading into the mountains. From early camping trips during their courtship to a last-minute trip to Ireland where they explored the countryside in a rental car the size of a shoebox, Caitlyn was happiest venturing into the unknown.
Some of her most treasured travel memories include fishing off the coast of Alaska, road-tripping to Chicago to meet fellow car enthusiasts from an internet forum, biking through Banff National Park, and visiting Ireland and the UK. Caitlyn travelled more in a decade than many people do in a lifetime - and she never took a moment of it for granted.
But for all the adventures, the highlight of her life was becoming a mother. Caitlyn and Michael welcomed their daughter Ruth in October 2023. Ruth was her joy, her heart, her greatest treasure. Watching Ruth learn and grow brought Caitlyn more happiness than anything else in the world.
Though reserved and introverted, Caitlyn had a presence that lit up any room. Her laugh was infectious, her smile radiant. She was captivating. She loved deeply and fiercely, maintaining close friendships even across years and miles. She was loyal, protective, generous, and would do anything for the people she loved. Caitlyn had the heart of an angel, and if everyone in the world was as kind, we would all be much better off.
Caitlyn is survived by her husband Michael, and her daughter Ruth; her parents Paul and Mary Hemming, her sister Tayla (Rick) Stalker, her niece Addelyne, and her nephews Brylan and Kysen; Michael’s parents Anthony and Nina Montoya; brothers-in-law Joseph and Daniel (Rachel); sister-in-law Angelena (Perry) Blubaugh; nieces Odette and Ida; and aunts, uncles, and assumed family all over the US.
A celebration of Caitlyn’s life will be held on Monday, June 16th, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Elevation Church, 711 4th Ave N, Billings, MT 59101. Guests are encouraged to wear vibrant spring and summer colors in her honor. A luncheon will follow at the same location.
Flowers and gifts are not necessary, but if you would like to contribute towards Caitlyn’s final expenses or Ruth’s education, donations can be made at www.gofundme.com/f/CaitiesFig…
