Cach's obituary

Luu Si Cach passed away on Saturday, October 23, 2021 after reaching his 97th birthday in July 2021. He passed away peacefully in his home in Dover, Delaware.

He was born in Vietnam in 1924 and was the sixth of eight siblings. He married Phong Lan Phan and had eight children including 6 sons and 2 daughters. They immigrated to Los Angeles, CA in 1983 and that’s when the Luu Family continued to grow. A total of 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren followed in the years to come up to the present day.

The Luu Family has always had an extraordinary strong bond, so strong that some may say we can be a bit co-dependent. Our grandfather was the reason our family is the way we are. He is the glue that kept us all together in the past present and future. It was because of Grandpa that we all sat down for family dinners every night, with everyone’s assigned seats, where we talked about anything from how our days went to politics to stories about how he would rescue his granddaughters from the make believe trash can we were left in. Fancy sirloin steaks and Quarter Pounder with Cheese combos were a couple of his favorite meals. He brought so much joy and knowledge to our lives with all his stories. His laugh was infectious and will never be forgotten. Family was so important to him that he kept collages of our photos around him when he knew that his mind was slowly leaving him. No matter what happens in life or where we were at, we could still feel his love strongly .

Our grandfather was everything to us- our leader, our protector, our babysitter, our teacher, our Uber driver, our buddy.. He was 100% there for us throughout our childhood. He drove us to school every day. When we moved to D.C. he continued to be there for us and drive us anywhere we needed to be. When we moved back to L.A., he continued to drive us to school up until high school. He loved to sing and had a really captivating voice. He sang to us and even to our pets. Some of the great grandkids were fortunate to endure his lovely vibrato that all the grandkids heard. For those that didn’t, we will be sure to share the videos and memories with them. He listened to the news every morning with a little old school battery operated radio. We would wake up to sounds of him turning the little dial in search for the radio frequency. He was an avid WWF wrestling fan and woke up at the crack of dawn or stayed up late to watch World Cup soccer matches.

If you are here today, he must’ve touched your life at some point in time in his full 97 years of life. He was a family man and community man. After he immigrated here from Vietnam, he attended ESL classes at night to learn how to speak, read, and write in English. He took this knowledge to help not only family but friends to complete any type of paperwork. He played a huge role in the Chinese American Associations in Chinatown in the 80s and 90s, during a time that the immigrant community needed this unification. Many families with kids in school benefited from scholarships that he organized through fundraisers. He spearheaded the Lunar New Year banquets and the mid-autumn festivals for the Hainam and Tuyhoa families to celebrate and to pass on these traditions to the next generations to come. Our grandfather was a man of many talents. Even during his last few months, we would hear him speak in so many different languages, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Mandarin, Hainam, Spanish, English and French. Before we had Microsoft Word, Cut and Paste, Excel, Google maps, Translate, iMovie, Spotify, we had Gung- the grandpa of all trades. With his handy dandy typewriter, he would draft documents using the two finger punching method. He literally cut and paste with scissors and Elmers glue to create certificates to present as a community organizer. Do not underestimate his skills, these were professional looking certificates and documents. For all his fundraising campaigns, he created budgets using graph paper to manage funds. If anyone needed directions to get places, he drew elaborate maps for them. He made home movies with VHS recorders and dubbed audio tapes for people. To help recent immigrants pass their citizenship test, he distributed audio tapes of the history of America and also shared mixtapes of patriotic ballads such as “God Bless the U.S.A” by Lee Greenwood. His patriotism was also something he passed along to us making sure every single Luu family member was registered to vote, and absentee too so we didn’t have to miss work or school to do it.

We were so fortunate to celebrate his 97th birthday in July 2021 with the entire family in the biggest reunion we’ve ever had. He had a good time partying it up just like how any Luu would want to with good food, drinks and company. He was still mobile and walking around with help at this event. He lived a full and fruitful life. Now we will continue to celebrate his life and legacy as he joins his wife, our fathers and our uncles in heaven.
