Byron's obituary

Mr. Byron Bernard Louis transitioned on Sunday, July 5, 2020 at his home in Thornton, Colorado. He was 63 years old.

Byron, affectionately known as Bernard by family and friends, was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He was the third child born to the late Eddie Louis and the late Mary Lee Blackwell, and had four brothers: Michael, Lamont, Kelvin, and Gregory. As a child, he would often be found at church and served as a Deacon at the Church of the Living God in Kansas City. As he grew older, he could be found on the basketball courts or running around town with his brothers and friends. Bernard graduated from Southeast High School in Kansas City before setting out on what would prove to be a big, full life.

In his early adult years, Bernard met a kind and giving man who introduced him to meteorology, where he ultimately found both a professional and personal passion. After deciding to pursue a career in weather, he briefly relocated to Nebraska before permanently landing in Colorado. He worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration his entire career and retired from his post as Data Acquisition Program Manager after 38 years of dedicated service with the National Weather Service. An active member of Blacks In Government for more than 15 years, he served as Treasurer for the Boulder County Chapter and was an active member of the Diversity Committee. Bernard took great pride in giving to others - whether it was his time, his guidance, or simply the warmth of his infectious smile and laugh.

Bernard was married to Karen Louis for 26 years. From this union, two children were born; Khalilah, who currently resides in Tampa, Florida and Vanessa of Denver, Colorado. Khalilah, his firstborn, was affectionately known as his twin. As a little girl, she was the ultimate daddy’s girl who never left his side - even if it meant accompanying him to the barbershop. As an adult, they frequently enjoyed long talks about everything from God and spirituality to current events and family. Vanessa, his youngest, was like the son he never had. They enjoyed playing basketball together early on, and loved watching basketball together once their age started showing. He introduced her to blended scotch whisky, and she introduced him to all things technology. And although opposites in many ways, the love between this “papadaddio” and his “baby girl” was one for the ages.

In his free time, and even more so after his retirement, Bernard was an avid golfer, bowler, domino/card/chess player, Kansas City Chiefs fan, and conversationalist. He never met a stranger, and welcomed everyone into his home and heart with ease. You could often find Bernard sharing a story over cookies or candy of some sort, as he had a huge heart and an even bigger sweet tooth. Jokingly referred to as “The Mayor of Everywhere He Went”, he was often the sharpest dressed man in the room, and the person everyone knew and adored. Above all else, Bernard loved his family more than anything in this world, and did everything in his power to make sure that love was felt every single day.

Bernard is survived and will be deeply missed by his two daughters, Khalilah Louis Caines (Jayson) and Vanessa Louis; his four brothers, Michael Robertson, Eddie Lamont Louis, Kelvin Louis, and Gregory Louis (DeeDee); and a host of family and friends that had the honor of knowing him. He is predeceased by his parents, Eddie Louis and Mary Lee Blackwell (Floyd).
