Burton's obituary
Burton Alan Krumholz, 93, died July 21, 2022 after a long and accomplished life. Born Burton Allan Kriegstein to Solomon Kriegstein and Ruth Kleinholz on December 12, 1928, Burton was later adopted by Robert Krumholz, Ruth’s second husband. Burton is a proud graduate of Colby College, Class of 1948, and New York Medical College, where he received his MD in 1953. He practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology, a field that enabled him to develop ongoing patient relationships while also using his skill to care for women, particularly the evaluation and treatment of women with lower genital diseases and abnormal Pap tests. He was a pioneer in treating women with laser surgery. Mid-career he fostered a deep interest in working with women born to mothers who had taken the drug diethylstibestrol (DES). From 1975 to 1995, he was Director of OB/GYN at Queens Hospital and Associate Chair of OB/GYN at Long Island Jewish-Hillside Medical Center. During that time, he also taught medical students at SUNY Stonybrook and Albert Einstein School of Medicine. He loved teaching and took great pride in working with medical students and OB/GYN residents.
Throughout his career he was active in professional associations. Most notably he served a term as President of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) from 1992-94. Currently ASCCP has an honor that it presents annually titled the Burton A. Krumholz Life-time Achievement Award. He was also a lifetime member of the Nassau County Medical Society. He served as President as well as several other positions for the American Society of OB/GYN for Nassau County. Until his death he continued to serve as a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
When not working, he and his wife enjoyed travel, golf and playing bridge with friends.
He is survived by his wife Shelley, children Debra, Linda, and Susan Krumholz, Glenn and Rose Marvel, and Andrew Marvel, and grandchildren Gabriella, Jaclyn, and Joseph.
