Bryan's obituary

Bryan Alan Coxwell, 70, passed away peacefully in his sleep early in the morning hours of Sunday, February 26, 2023. His loving and devoted wife Cindy was at his side.

Born on December 9, 1952, in Brunswick, Georgia, Alan was raised in Beaufort, South Carolina, the son of the late Hugh Coxwell, Sr. and Austine Brewer Coxwell, and brother to Hugh Coxwell, Jr. (Jan), Mac Coxwell (Linda), and Paula Coxwell.

Alan graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, and earned his Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist degree from Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. Alan was known for his technical skills and knowledge, but was beloved for his compassion and ability to make patients feel at ease. He was particularly renown for his ability to work with children, whose fears he was able to allay.

Alan shared his gifts through medical mission trips to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, where he made a difference for residents seeking medical treatment in often difficult circumstances.

Alan retired from the Carolinas Health Care System in Monroe, NC and found the perfect spot to design and build his and Cindy’s “forever home” on the Bells River in Yulee, Florida. It reminded him of the Low Country, and he cherished time on the water.

Alan’s Christian faith was the beacon in his life. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Fernandina Beach, and served on the safety team.

When Alan set his mind to something, he saw it through and made it happen. This was particularly evident in his love of adventure, which led him to hike parts of the Appalachian Trail, the Grand Canyon, and scale Mt. Kilimanjaro with Cindy. He was an avid boater, RV’er, sky diver and member of the United States Parachute Association, private pilot, licensed sea captain, and certified scuba diver. He rode with the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA) for ten years. He ran in the New York Marathon in 2011.

Alan and Cindy fell in love with the Florida Keys after Alan planned a trip especially for Cindy. It was in his favorite place in the Keys that the Lord called him home. The family is comforted knowing that Alan is in the presence of Jesus, having departed this earth in his happy place with his wife beside him.

Alan served in the Army, and will be interred in the National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC at noon on March 27, 2023. Following the military tribute, family and close friends will gather for a reception at Meadowbrook Baptist Church of Beaufort, where his nephew Michael serves as pastor.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Alan’s memory to either the Meadowbrook Baptist Church Benevolence Fund, 12 Lupo Drive, Beaufort SC 29907, or to First Baptist Fernandina Beach Benevolence Fund, 1600 South 8th Street, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034. Importantly, the prayers and words of comfort given to the family continue to warm their hearts, and are greatly appreciated.
