Background

My Dad had a lot of stories about the teacher nuns at his Catholic school. One of his favorites was Sister Stephanie. She was kind but firm. She had a "way" of convincing the "riff raff" to take things seriously and actually want to learn. Over the years, my dad watched Sister Stephanie's career move from teaching to beginning her own charity to help the "riff raff" outside of Lansing take life a little more seriously by developing awareness of the wider world by actually experiencing it. Several years before he died, my Dad wrote instructions to his family that any memorial gifts be made to Sister Stephanie's charity called GATE (Global Awareness Through Experience).
