Background
On Monday, October 20th, 2025, the Nebraska softball community was devastated by the news of Brian Sweeney’s passing. Brian was a cornerstone of the umpiring world — serving the NSAA, NCAA, Iowa, and Summer Travel Ball communities. It was never unusual to see Brian working an NCAA Division II game on a Saturday, then back on the field Sunday umpiring a 10U game in Nebraska. His love for the game made him a familiar presence throughout the Midwest.
Tragically, Brian passed away just before what would have been one of the most meaningful moments of his career — officiating the Class B State Championship game alongside his brother, Jeff Sweeney. Together, they were about to fulfill a lifelong dream. Brian gave countless hours to the sport he loved. Now, we’re asking the softball community he served so faithfully to give back. We’re asking for help raising $3,200 to ensure Brian’s final expenses are fully covered.
