Brian's obituary

Brian Lee Burgess, Daddio, Pape

January 9, 1957 - March 7, 2026

Brian Lee Burgess, 69, of Birmingham, AL, peacefully passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 2:40pm, surrounded by his loved ones.

Brian was born in Mobile, AL on January 9, 1957 at Brookley Airforce Base. He graduated from Minor High School - Class of 75’, where he had just celebrated their 50th year reunion. He attended Livingston University where he played football and later transferred to Auburn University. At the age of 24, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served his country for the next 6 years on board the ship, USS Richmond K. Turner, as Fire Controlman First Class. The radar skills he developed in the Navy led him to his career job. He spent the majority of his career as the Electronics Systems Analyst (ESA) for the National Weather Service in both Atlanta, GA and Huntsville, AL. He retired from NWS Huntsville in 2019, after 38 hardworking years in the federal government. Some of his closest friendships were made in those offices. In his retirement, he was happily a longtime member and former president of the Huntsville Gem and Mineral Society (HGMS). He started his own LLC, BB’s Earthly Treasures, where he traveled to various gem and mineral shows throughout the southeast; selling and sharing knowledge about what he loved the most - rocks.

If you knew Brian, you knew he loved many things, but on the top of that list were: his family, rockhounding, playing cards, poker nights at The Eagles Lodge, traveling via roadtrips and sitting out looking at the stars.

He left his legacy with us all through the many “on board ship” stories, reminiscing over fond family memories, and the countless pieces of stone and wire-wrapped jewelry he handmade with love and intention.

Brian is survived and cherished by his mother, Mary Burgess, his sister and brother-in-law, Cathy Scarvey and Johnny Scarvey, his children Sara Larson (son-in-law, Reed Larson), Daniel Burgess, Michael Burgess, and his daughter-in-law, Stephanie Pack Burgess. His grandchildren Isaac Burgess, Dylan Burgess, and Claudia Burgess. His nieces, Mary Scarvey and Michele Galluzzi (Sal Galluzzi) and nephews, Justin Shiflett (Charity Shiflett), Will Stewart, and Patrick Scarvey. His great nephews, Andrew Scarvey, Alex Scarvey and Cody Belew, and great-niece, Emma Scarvey. And so many friends that were family.

We will miss that infectious smile and unwavering sense of humor Earth-side, but until we meet again - “fair winds and following seas” Daddio.

The funeral service will be Wednesday, March 18th at 11am at the Alabama National Cemetery. For anyone who wants to attend, please be there promptly at 10:30am. We plan to have a celebration of life in the near future, details TBD.

Address to cemetery:  3133 Hwy 119, Montevallo, AL 35115 - they will direct you where to go when you drive in
