Brian's obituary
Brian William-Hiapo Awai, 33, of Kula, Hawaii, passed away on April 9, 2023. He was born on May 16, 1989, in Southfield, MI, to his loving mother Ora'lea Starr, also known as Dawn Gottlieb. Brian had a twin brother named Daniel Awai, who survives him. He was the nephew of Adam Gottlieb and the grandson of Ted Gottlieb and Barbara Plecas. He was the grandson of Daniel and Leina Awai.
Brian was an independent, intelligent, courageous, and determined individual. His sense of humor was unmatched, and he had a talent for making others laugh. Many believed he had the potential to be a successful stand-up comedian. He had a natural ability to connect with children and animals, and he dreamed of getting married and of becoming a father. Brian found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as spending time with good friends, cooking and savoring delicious food, enjoying the beach, and playing football and basketball. In addition, he had a passion for music and learned to play the guitar, showcasing his smooth and captivating singing voice.
Above all, Brian desired love and companionship. He wished for a fulfilling life, providing for himself and his future family. His aspirations included finding a loving partner, raising children, and embracing a comfortable and uncomplicated existence.
Brian attended Wines Elementary School and later graduated from King Kekaulike High School. He furthered his education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. During his time in college, Brian worked as a pizza cook. Following graduation, he pursued a career as a claims adjuster for HMSA in Honolulu, Hawaii.
In his leisure time, Brian engaged in various hobbies. He enjoyed writing, playing football and basketball, indulging in video games, boogie boarding, and spending quality time with his friends. The beach held a special place in his heart, and he relished the calming atmosphere it provided. Additionally, Brian found great pleasure in cooking and savoring delectable cuisine.
Brian was an avid writer and published his first book about economics on Amazon. At the time of his passing, he was working on a series of novels about pirates, which he had hoped to turn into a screen play.
A ceremony to celebrate Brian's life will be held at Hale Makua @ the Tuxedo Junction, located at 427 Kaulana Street, Kahului, HI 96732, on November 11, 2023, from 11 am to 1 pm.
Brian William-Hiapo Awai will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will forever be cherished, and his kind and vibrant spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to be touched by his presence. In love and aloha. A hui hou, Brian.
