Brett's obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Brett Michael Armstead, who left this world on May 11, 2025, just days shy of his 36th birthday. Born on May 15, 1989, in Waterloo, IA, Brett was a vibrant soul whose laughter and spirit touched the lives of many. His journey through life was marked by resilience, love, and a zest for living that inspired everyone around him.

Brett was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Jessica Kay Huddleston, and his mother, Tammy Lynn Armstead. He also mourned the loss of his paternal grandparents, Mary Jean Armstead and Edwin Earl Armstead. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, but his legacy will endure through the lives he touched.

Brett was a father, although he hadn't been able to see his daughter since she was very little, Katie Armstead, of Kirksville, MO. He is survived by his father, Robert Armstead (and Traci) of Independence, IA, and his adopted mother, Nancy (Mattson) Miller of Humboldt, IA. He leaves behind a loving family that includes five sisters—Annette (Josh) Link of North Carolina, Ashley Kern of Independence, IA, Nicole (Darrell) Jones of Independence, IA, Kandi Armstead (Gary Stallings) of Sioux City, IA, and Brittany (Bradley) Robbins of Independence, IA—along with two brothers, Justin (Whitney) Armstead of Hazleton, IA, and Dawson (Kayla) Miller of Oelwein, IA. Brett took great joy in being an uncle to ten nieces and eight nephews: Alexus, Addilynn, Kinnick, Hayden, Anniston, Alaina, Aubrey, Kyliee, Seth Jr., Camden, Alivia, Paisley, Kaden, Maddison, Brantley, Emmett, Arabella, Lynnlee, and Khai.

Brett attended school at Independence High School with the class of 2007, where he was known for his spirited personality, serving as a cheerleader and playing the trumpet in the marching band. He later ventured into the workforce, working as a custodian at the Arena in Miami, FL, before making his way to Los Angeles, CA.

Brett's passion for life was unmatched. He was openly and proudly gay, and his love for drag was an integral part of his identity. The stage was his second home, and the gay club “The Palace” in Miami was where he felt most alive and accepted. Brett was renowned for his infectious laughter, which resembled that of a hyena, and his ability to turn any mundane activity into a moment of joy, often by dancing around his home and singing “Barbie Girl” by Aqua into an empty beer bottle or hairbrush. These moments of pure joy exemplified his spirit—always seeking to brighten the days of those around him.

Despite facing the challenges of living with AIDS for the last 14 years of his life, Brett never let his illness define him. He lived with courage and determination, filling his days with laughter, love, and the company of his family and friends. He had an uncanny ability to see the goodness in everyone, a trait that endeared him to many. His bond with his sister Kandi was particularly special; despite living so far apart from each other, they remained each other’s rocks, speaking weekly to provide support and love.

Brett will be remembered not only for his vibrant personality and infectious laughter but also for the deep love he held for his family and friends. He was the life of the party and had an uncanny ability to lift spirits even on the hardest days.

There will not be any funeral services for Brett, however a celebration of life will be planned for a later time.

As we bid farewell to Brett Michael Armstead, we celebrate a life that was rich in love, laughter, and the courage to be oneself. Though he may have departed this world, his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered
