Stu's obituary
Brendan Stuart (Stu) MacIntyre II
December 24, 1924 – February 22, 2026
Stu passed away peacefully in his home at 101 years old. He was predeceased by his wife Joan Marie MacIntyre (McNamara); his parents Brendan Stuart MacIntyre Sr. and Ivy Elvina MacIntyre (Beazley); his sisters Patricia MacIntyre (Walsh), Joan MacIntyre (Lennox), and Nancy MacIntyre (Dix). He will be missed by his sister Maryjane (Janie) MacIntyre (Rietow).
Stu was born in Long Beach but spent most of his life in Oakland, Ca. He was educated at Lakeview Elementary School and Oakland High School. He was a veteran of World War II. Stu joined his father’s construction business as a carpenter, and then became the owner and manager of B Stuart MacIntyre and Son until passing the reins to his son Paul.
Stu has been a member of the Catholic fraternal organization Young Men’s Institute (YMI) since 1951, when he joined Council #8. Over the years he served in many leadership roles, and remained an active member even as a centenarian. Stu first met his future wife Joan at a dinner honoring a YMI priest. Joan was serving at the dinner with the YLI (Young Ladies Institute). The YMI and YLI were an important part of Joan and Stu’s social community throughout their marriage.
Joan and Stu held a strong belief in the importance of service and in creating a supporting community. They were blessed with the privilege of helping many immigrants by offering them temporary lodging in their home. Active for years in Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, the family transitioned to St. Leo’s the Great Parish in 1971. For many years Stu was an ardent supporter of Joan’s work as a peace and social justice activist.
Joan and Stu raised eight children: Brendan, Paul, Kathleen, Maureen, Ann Marie, Patrick, Ralph, and Marc. He will be missed by his daughters in law; Sara Lefkowitz, Rebecca MacIntyre, and Stacy MacIntyre; his grandchildren Natalie Jeanne (& Brian), Nicholas (& Logan), Joan (& Kenny), A’mari (& David), Brenda Ivy, Michael (& An), Angelina (& Timothy), Sean (& Sarah), Alannah (& Bryan),Devin (& Bella), Audrey, Natalie, Marie, Ian and Jack; his great grandchildren Olivia, Levi, Aphea, Aurora, Alex, Brandon Jr., James, Gwen, Katja, Kenneth IV, Heide, Moxie, Arabella, Dominic, Johnovan, Logan, Reagan, Owen and Everett; and by his many friends.
Stu’s beloved wife of 55 years died in 2008. The following year Stu made his first trip to Burning Man with his son Patrick. They returned home to build a mobile bar, which was christened Bar Mactropolis, or Bar Mac for short. Over the next 15 years, Stu held court at Bar Mac; sharing wisdom, humor, and love of community. Bar Mac’s slogan is “my camp’s bar is better than your camp’s seminar”. In his 80th and 90th decades, when most people‘s friend groups are shrinking, Stu built a devoted, diverse, and multigenerational community that sustained him.
