Bee's obituary

Brenda "Bee" Jean Metz, known for her kind heart, generous nature, and hilarious personality, sadly passed away on July 25, 2024, at the age of 72. She was born on September 23, 1951, in Lloydminster, AB, Canada, and most recently resided in Leduc, AB, Canada.

Bee had lived with MS for 40 years. Over the years she’d been in and out of remission and seemingly symptom free. But the final ten years became challenging — she was confined to a wheelchair, the symptoms becoming more and more unbearable, but with some excellent home care equipment and the help of her husband Tom, she remained in the family home.

Bee had a great voice and loved to sing — she loved the music of Dolly Parton, Conway Twitty, Don Williams, Blake Shelton, and anything played on CFCW radio station.

She had was a free spirit and a curious mind — within minutes of meeting someone she’d get their birthdate & begin assessing their astrological sign.

In the 80s she would ferment her own probiotic Kefir in the fridge — it looked freaky but she claimed it was good for you. And in the pantry downstairs she had a Kombucha  mushroom growing in a giant round Tupperware container  next to a vat of her homemade Crabapple Liquor— much easier to get down than the Kefir & Kombucha brew.

She wasn’t a big fan of bodies of water — once while floating down the Penticton River Coyote Cruise on an inner tube (holding the entire family’s belongings) her tube flipped, and the wet T-shirt contest was on!

She loved the land more — spending time sitting in her front room, basking in the warm sunshine. Once the girls were in high school the Metz home became the gathering place for both sets of friends. Bee would sit at the kitchen table chatting, staying on top of current events within the groups. It was unclear if the friends were around for the girls or for Bee.

In her younger years — she was an all-star baseball player. And when her girls were in high school and her MS was in remission she coached the girls Leduc Elks ball team. She would take the team for Slurpees after practice and led the team to provincial gold.

One cold winter day in the early 90s when she noticed an elderly woman walking in below-freezing temperatures carrying groceries, Bee pulled over and offered her a ride, and the two became fast friends. For many years she regularly took Mrs. McKenzie out to run errands, until she moved into a care home.

Before she needed the use of a wheel chair — Bee used a mobility scooter to zip  around. On one occasion while visiting her daughter in Squamish — she took grandson Lukas for a spin. The travelled down a little hill going down to a playground & had a little roll over. No one was injured in the incident, in fact Lukas wanted to do it again.

Another time, on a hot summer day — she finished a cold brewskie, tossed it behind the scooter, hit reverse and crushed the can. Beeeeeee-ast mode !

Bee was married to Tom for 52 years and they shared a lifetime of memories together and lots and lots of laughs. Once Tom retired at 60, they bought a motorhome and drove to Alaska and back. The trip of a lifetime for the couple.

She was an incredible mum & friend to her daughters, Lorie and Heather. She loved following the sporting accomplishments of her grandkids Lukas, Brodie, and Kingston.

Bee is survived by her brother, Bob, and sister, Sharon. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor, kind heart, and beautiful smile.

Her spirit will live on and so will some of her catch phrases. Here are a few of her classics : “Bee good or bee bad," "The party is over," and "You look fine — you're not going to a fashion show."

Bee's presence is already  deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. Her memory will be cherished forever.

We love you Bee.
