Brad's obituary
Born in Singapore in 1982, Brad spent the first few years of his life in Indonesia where is father, Bob Boyl, worked as an ex-pat. Moving back to Portland a few years later, Brad attended Ainsworth elementary and later Lincoln High School. Building substantial roots in the Pacific Northwest, Brad attended University of Puget Sound in 2001, later joining the fraternity Phi Delta Theta, and graduating with his Bachelors degree in 2004. During his time there he made lasting friendships and was active in the alumni community in the years following, even serving as the Portland chapter president for several years.
After college, Brad spent 3 months backpacking around the varies geographies of Peru, which was riddled with adventures. From surviving in the deep jungle with an eye infection, hunting alligators in a dugout canoe, and being held up at gunpoint, Brad's experiences left a lasting impression. Once finished with his trek, Brad moved back to Portland and worked at Andina before landing his first of many roles in the Finance industry. Never one for missing out on the action, Brad joined Merrill Lynch at the beginning of the financial crisis, before moving to TD Ameritrade in 2008. He talks often about his experiences during this time and has the front page declaring Lehman Brothers insolvency framed in his office on Woodstock.
Brad married Christine Gerrie in 2010, settling in SW Portland. During this time he further developed a life-long passion for Oregon wine, and began participating in industry events to broaden his knowledge base. He eventually completed his first level certification through the Master Court of Sommeliers in 2015. Brad and Christine divorced in 2015, and Brad met Rachel Crocker shortly thereafter.
A natural water enthusiast, Brad became scuba certified in 2016 by braving the frigid waters of the Hood Canal. Brad enthusiastically completed >30 dives over the next few years, in all of the exotic and beautiful places. Between 2016 and 2021, Brad would visit more than 15 countries in all.
In 2021, Brad married Rachel in Puerto Vallarta on February 28th. On the second day of his honeymoon, Brad suffered a serious dive accident, landing him in the ICU in Mexico for several days and igniting a series of medical concerns over the coming years. In 2022, Brad developed a serious medical condition which went untreated for many months. Once treatment began in November of 2022, it was an insurmountable battle to overcome. After numbers hospitalizations, transfusions, and major surgery, Brad was unable to recover and passed away on March 25th, 2023.
