Bonnie's obituary

John 16:22 - Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

Bonnie Jean Greasby, a former resident of Wauwatosa, WI, passed away peacefully at home on the morning of December 27, 2024, in Johnson City, TN, at the age of 80. Born on November 14, 1944, in Crown Point, IN, Bonnie was the third of five children born to Joan and Paul Doepping.

A devoted and inspiring English Language Arts teacher at Whitnall Middle School in Greenfield, WI, Bonnie was politically active as a steadfast advocate for education. She dedicated her life to nurturing young minds and instilling a love of learning. Her passion for reading and knowledge fed an inquisitive spirit that extended far beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her. Her sense of adventure and devotion to her family led her to crisscross the country, quickly building community wherever she put down roots. No matter where she landed or where she was heading, she could always find the best frozen custard stand.

Her faith was also a cornerstone of her life. She derived great strength and fellowship from her women’s study group at Concordia Lutheran Church in Kingsport, TN under the guidance of Pastor Paul Becker.

Bonnie drew great joy from the creativity and beauty she surrounded herself with and made it her mission to share that happiness with others. Interior decorating was her obsession, and shopping for hidden treasures her superpower. Transformation was an ongoing process, and she enthusiastically loaned her expertise to Mother Nature, as well. She carefully pondered ways to make every creature happier and more comfortable. She spent hours at a time in the yard, talking to each bird who chirped at her as she tenderly moved potted plants, saplings, and shrubs around to ensure that each had adequate sunlight or shade and just the right amount of water. She took special delight in watching the wildlife in her backyard, making sure every passing or resident squirrel, possum, raccoon, rabbit, runaway dog, stray cat, and migrating bird had a full bowl or feeder, a cute cottage or warm shelter, and their favorite plants to nibble in her generous garden. A savvy few—her beloved cats, Penny, Toni, and Cleo – found their way into her home as well as her heart. They stood faithful vigil over Bonnie throughout her courageous fight against aggressive nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Bonnie’s kindness and generosity touched countless lives. When the pandemic hit, Bonnie sewed colorful masks for everyone she knew. Her deftness with needle and thread created costumes for many school plays. Bonnie formed meaningful connections with those around her, including the caregivers who supported her during her illness. Even after she lost the ability to speak, she would smile in gratitude through her pain. She held special appreciation for Sheena and Sierra, whose compassion she deeply valued.

Bonnie is lovingly remembered by her children, Rebecca Greasby (Shane Jones) and Steven Greasby (Jennifer); her grandson, Mason Greasby; granddaughter-in-law, Brianna Cerniglia; great-grandson-in-law, Liam Cerniglia; siblings David (Donna) and Wendy; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother Paul "Butch"; and her sister Judith.

In keeping with her generous spirit, Bonnie chose to donate her body to research through Restore Life. A memorial service to celebrate Bonnie’s life will be held in Johnson City, TN on Friday, February 15, 2025. Details regarding the time and location will be shared soon.

May her memory bring comfort and inspiration to all who knew and loved her.
