Bobsy's obituary
Bishop Bobsy McDonald Strachan was born on March 8, 1940 in Saint Andrew, Jamaica, West Indies. Bobsy was the ninth of fourteen children of Samuel and Belrona Strachan. He received his childhood education at Mount James Elementary School in Saint Andrew, and went on to study tailoring in Golden Spring. He then worked as a tailor at a factory in Kingston, Jamaica.
Bobsy gave his life to Christ at a young age, and in 1963 while attending Jones Town Church of God, under the leadership of Pastor Samuel G. Hines, he met and married his wife, Velma Allen. Together they had four children. In 1973, after the closing of the factory where he worked, Bobsy began a career as a bus driver for the Jamaica Omnibus Service (J.O.S). Years later, he purchased a van and began working as an independent minibus driver.
In 1980, desiring a better life for his family, Bobsy migrated to the United States. On May 23, 1982, shortly after arriving, he attended Bethel Bible Institute where he obtained a diploma of achievement in Evangelism. His family eventually joined him here in the United States in April 1984. He continued his studies earning a certificate of achievement, on May 26, 1990 in the Ministerial Internship Program.
Bobsy and his family attended Cambria Heights Church of God under the mentorship of Bishop Cyril Pratt until December 6, 1992 when the Lord called him into full time ministry. He began Hempstead Missions with a membership of five, four of whom were family members and one faithful friend, Sister Claudette Samuels. As the ministry grew, the church relocated to Queens, New York and the name was changed to Bible Vision Church of God. Bishop Strachan retired as pastor of Bible Vision Church of God in 2015.
Pastor Bobsy Strachan had a passion for the work of God. He had a deep desire to encourage believers to reach their highest potential spiritually while fulfilling their purpose. He was always ready and willing to share his wisdom with anyone who cared to listen. Even after retiring Bishop Strachan could be found reading and studying the Word of God. Anyone who visited the home was sure to leave with a prayer and a word of encouragement. At home, Bishop Strachan was sharp-witted, humorous, and very outspoken. He was most content when his wife, whom he lovingly referred to as “Vel” was by his side.
Bishop Strachan is preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Belrona Strachan, his daughter Karen, brothers Simeon, Edwin, Arthur, Harold and David; and his sisters Eileen, and Mary. Left celebrating his notable legacy is his wife Velma, daughters Lorna and Lorraine, son Robert (Tarka); granddaughters Alyssa, Roberta, KayAnn, Renaya, Sabrina, Taylor, and Olivia; grandsons Ramel, Paul Jr., Mark, Elijah, and Robert-Allen; brothers Samuel, William, Roy, and Victor; sisters Daphne and Ena; and nieces, nephews, extended families and friends. He will forever be missed!
