Bobby's obituary

Bobby passed peacefully and so sweetly into the arms of his Creator this past Wednesday night, October 2nd at 9:35pm surrounded by SO much love, kisses, his beloved tennis balls, stuffed animals and treats. We are deeply grieving his presence in our hearts and home. He has left a HUGE hole that will take time to heal.

"BOBBY…Bob, Robert, Mr. Bob, Our Bobby boy, Mr. Bobster or The Bobster, My buddy boy, My booboo, My baby, Sweetness, My sweetheart, Mi nino, DOGTOR Bobby, Our love, the BEST man and dog in the universe, the most beautiful dog in the world. Bobby made our hearts sing and filled our every moment with God’s unconditional love and presence."

On September 25th, we received the very sad news that Bobby had metastatic lung cancer and that his days with us were numbered. We lived his last week of life to the fullest—loving him, celebrating him, doing all the things he loved, and soaking in his beautiful unconditional love, patience, beauty, and presence in our lives.

Bobby was so much more than a dog, more than just a simple pet. He was our best friend, my daily partner, teammate, work companion, and soul friend. Bobby was trained as Edwin’s service dog but became my therapy dog as well, and served as a therapy dog to hundreds of people during his lifetime at the Good News Community Health Center, NW Pediatrics Integrative Medicine, countless neighbors, and others.

Bobby was with us through the most difficult decade of our lives. He got Edwin through the hardest years of his life and ensured that Edwin reached adulthood—happy, healthy, and functioning. I will forever be grateful for the role that Bobby played in Edwin’s life. Most people raise children with another human being, but God gave me a partner in the form of a furry, four-footed ball of love. Bobby was like God in the flesh, always right next to me, showering me with unconditional love, kindness, peace, joy, and sweetness. I remember so many times when Edwin was out of control, yelling and slamming doors, and Bobby would lie calmly and peacefully at Edwin’s door, waiting for him to calm down. There were so many times I almost heard God say, “Suzanne, watch Bobby. Do what he is doing!”

Bobby accompanied us on our huge move and transition from Costa Rica back to the USA. He was my constant comfort and companion when Edwin went to a residential program (a couple of times) and when Nain went off to college. Bobby was there through the deaths of my brother Walt, my sister-in-law Amie, and my sweet mama. I remember my mama looking at Bobby and me two days before she died and saying, “Suzannie, I’m so glad you have Bobby and for all the joy he brings you!” I remember nights of deep sadness and difficulty when I couldn’t sleep. Bobby had a very rhythmic, peaceful little snore, and so many nights I would match my breath to his and be able to fall back asleep. Bobby helped me become a much more compassionate, understanding, patient, and open-hearted person.

The day Eddie and Bobby met for the first time, when Bobby was about 3 months old, it was love at first sight. Bobby came into Edwin’s life when Edwin was 12 years old and entering the most difficult years of his life. Bobby was able to give God’s unconditional love and presence to Edwin like no human could. Even though Edwin spent time away from Bobby in different programs, at school, and most recently at work, Bobby has always been a touchstone for Edwin, reminding him of God’s incomprehensible love, a love not dependent on anything we do or don’t do. Bobby greeted Edwin with love every morning, welcomed him home with snuggles, and put him to bed each night with a heart full of love. Bobby was there for Edwin in the darkest days of his life.

Bobby’s love and presence have left an indelible mark on our lives. Though he is no longer physically with us, the lessons he taught us—about unconditional love, patience, and compassion—will continue to shape who we are. He will forever be a part of our family, reminding us daily of the beauty in loving and being loved so purely. We will carry his spirit with us always.
