Blair's obituary
Born on November 17, 1958, Blair is predeceased by his father Ernest Tetreault and mother Joan Nurse.
Blair is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Louise, his sons, Scott, Kevin and Darcy and his brothers David (Louise) and Brian. He will be dearly missed by his nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, colleagues and friends.
Born in Montreal, Blair completed the broadcasting program at Algonquin College in Ottawa in 1981 which jumpstarted a long and remarkable career in the industry.
In the early 1980s, Blair worked as an editor for various news and public affairs shows at CTV. He subsequently moved into sports, editing coverage for CTV at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. His work impressed, and he was hired by CBS to work on the US network’s coverage of the men’s hockey tournaments at the 1994 and 1998 Winter Olympics, where he won his first Emmy Award for CBS’ Winter Olympics coverage from Lillehammer in 1994.
From editing, he moved onto working as a technical director. His time as a “TD” included working on the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, the women’s hockey tournament at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Whether acting as an editor, a tape operator, technical director, director or producer, Blair was respected as an expert in his trade. In the 2000s, Blair transitioned his focus onto the beautiful game of soccer, working major tournaments across North America including the COPA America, MLS, and the Canadian Premier League. This culminated in him winning a second Emmy Award as the Director of the CONCACAF Cup Final in 2015.
Always generous in gracefully guiding juniors in the industry, Blair was known for his keenness to help, his smile and his sense of humour. He will be deeply missed by his friends and colleagues in the broadcasting industry- many of whom referred to Blair as their “Broadcasting Dad.”
An avid traveller, Blair enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family and friends at his home in Orléans. He enjoyed lounging in the backyard, keeping busy with projects around the house and cracking jokes with neighbours. He adored his wife and his three sons, providing ever-present guidance as they navigated their lives and careers.
Blair was known to be incredibly kind and compassionate when it came to children and animals. Children were quick to befriend him for his playful and humorous character and they would often refer to him as Uncle Blair. Blair loved to walk his dog, Millie, through the ‘woods’ of Queenswood Heights, a tradition he had started with his beloved Cosmo. Millie misses Blair deeply.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute for their remarkable work and support. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Blair can be made via their website
A ceremony of life will be planned for family and friends during the summer of 2021. Details will be shared at a later date.
